Former SID Rick Riehl passes away
MEQUON, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin is saddened by the loss of former athletic administrator Rick Riehl, who lost his battle with Cruetzfeldt-Jakob disease on Sunday. He was 67.
"The Concordia University Wisconsin community mourns together with Rick's wife, Donna, his wonderful family and many friends," President Patrick Ferry said. "Truly, Rick's was a life that mattered. He made a difference and had an impact on so many people as a teacher, coach, and mentor. He lived out our university's mission of "helping students develop on mind, body, and spirit for service to Christ in the church and world." Now he is in the nearer presence of Jesus celebrating the ultimate victory--we do not grieve without hope. But, Rick will truly be missed."
Riehl was the forefather of the Department of Athletic Communications at CUW, helping start the Falcon Athletic Network broadcasting nearly every home event via video and audio. He was also instrumental in the transition away from an .edu website to what is now CUWFalcons.com.
"Rick was a valued colleague and friend to us all that knew him," Director of Athletic Dr. Rob Barnhill said. "He was one of the kindest and happiest people that I have known and his spirit will be missed. Please keep his family in your prayers."
He was the first full-time Sports Information Director at CUW and held the position for 10 years before moving to the Advancement Office for two years prior to his retirement in June. Preceding his time at CUW he was a teacher and basketball coach at West Bend East High School for 32 years.
The Riehl family has decided to hold a private service for family members in lieu of an open funeral for the public. A celebration of his life is currently being discussed for the summer of 2016.
