Kurek, Pfannerstill named Co-Female Athletes of the Year
MEQUON, Wis. – After successful seasons this past athletics year, which included being named All-Region First Team in their respective sports, Women's Lacrosse player Allison Kurek and Women's Soccer player Carley Pfannerstill have been named the Co-Female Athlete of the Year for the 2014-15 season.
CUWFalcons.com has released each of its four major awards over the past four weeks, the Female Athlete of the Year being the final one released in the process. Sammi Reiter (Women's Hockey, Women's Lacrosse) was the Female Career Achievement honoree, while Austin Damaschke (Football) and Sean Ambrocio (Wrestling) were the Male Career Achievement winners. Last week, Damaschke was also honored as the Male Athlete of the Year.
Kurek, a freshman from Chicago, Ill., had an impressive year in leading the Falcons to their first-ever Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference regular season and tournament championships. The rookie midfielder was named the MWLC Rookie of the Year and took home All-MWLC First Team honors after pacing the Falcons with 78 points, 62 goals, eight free-position goals, 86 ground balls, 103 draw control wins, 130 shots, 101 shots on goal and 57 caused turnovers.
Kurek was also the first Falcon to earn All-Region First Team honors in Women's Lacrosse and just the second player in program history to earn any type of All-Region selection. She was named to the All-Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Great Lakes Region First Team after her impressive first season with the team. The Falcons went 7-0 in conference games rolling through the MWLC in the process.
Pfannerstill, a junior from Grafton, Wis., became the first Falcons player to earn NSCAA/Continental Tire All-Central Region First Team honors. The forward had a strong season in scoring 38 points, which included 15 goals and eight assists as the Falcons posted a 14-6-0 overall record. CUW also reached the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship game and finished second in the NACC during the regular season with an 8-2-0 conference mark.
Pfannerstill was also a All-NACC First Team selection in 2014 for the second straight season. She finished fifth in the NACC with her 38 points. The junior also reached the 100-point mark for her career in the team's final game of the season, the NACC Final against Aurora.
