2016-17 Stories of the Year (No. 5): Lacrosse programs rise to the top
MEQUON, Wis. – The 2016-17 athletic year was another successful one for the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons. The Falcons won and contended for conference championships in many sports and put together an impressive list of great achievements. As in years past, the Department of Athletic Communications tries to sort through all the great moments and give you, the fans, the top stories from the past year.
The list of stories was compiled by the Department of Athletic Communications and, like all lists, is subject to debate. The top stories will be revealed over the next six weeks, with a story being released on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The top story will be released on June 22.
No. 5: Lacrosse programs rise to the top
It takes time for great things to happen and the 2017 season was the culmination of many years of preparation and hard work for both of Concordia Wisconsin’s lacrosse programs. What resulted on April 28 was the Falcons winning a share of their respective conference regular season titles and obtaining the top seed for the conference tournament.
Women’s Lacrosse had been there and done it before, winning both the regular season and tournament titles in 2015 and 2016, but it takes a lot of sweat and dedication to repeat three times. They achieved success by winning a share of the Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Conference regular season title with a 10-1 record and with that earned the top seed for the MWLC Tournament.
While the final result wasn’t wanted – a loss in the MWLC Tournament Championship game – it was nothing to hang their heads about. During the season they pushed their conference winning streak to 28-consecutive games, which was the third longest in the nation at the time, and lasted since April 26 of 2014.
Success can be contagious and the Men’s Lacrosse program checked off a goal, on their list of many, this season by winning a share of the Midwest Lacrosse Conference regular season title with a 7-1 record. They had the top seed in the MLC Tournament and hosted the Championship game for the first time in program history.
The season just had a different feel and as we entered the month of April, the Falcons put their foot down and showed they were a forced to be reckoned with – winning seven of eight games – to gain momentum into the postseason. Concordia Wisconsin won six games by double-digits and posted a glossy 8-1 record at home.
The foundation has been established for many more conference titles to come for both lacrosse programs.
