Johnson, Luethe earn Career Achievement Award
MEQUON, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin's Department of Athletics announced its Career Achievement Award winners Russell Johnson and Katie Luethe on Friday, based on their complete body of work over the past four years.
CUW created the award for the 2013-14 athletic year for the first time ever, to recognize a male and female student-athlete who signified what it means to represent the University in mind, body and spirit. Head coaches were allowed to nominate one senior from their sport and that student-athlete must have made a significant impact to their program over the past four years. A committee then voted for each winner.
Johnson (senior, Monticello, Minn.) is one of, if not the most successful Men's Tennis players in school history. His name is scattered throughout the record books and his efforts helped the Falcons win three conference regular season and tournament titles, and advance to three NCAA Division III Tournaments.
He holds three season and career records. Johnson is the program's all-time leader in singles victories (76), singles winning percentage (.800, 76-19) and doubles winning percentage (.6760, 65-32). He also holds the top season record for singles wins (22, 2011-12), singles winning percentage (.880, 22-3, 2011-12) and doubles winning percentage (.792, 19-5, 2010-11).
Johnson also received numerous conference accolades over the past four years, including Player of the Year honors in 2012-13. He is a four-time all-league singles player and three-time all-league doubles partner. On five occasions, he was named the conference's Player of the Week, including three times during the 2012-13 season. In three different seasons he was the league's leader in winning percent for singles and doubles.
Luethe (senior, Oshkosh, Wis.) has been one of the most consistent Women's Basketball players in program history. She guided the Falcons to 76 victories, a 2012-13 conference North Division title and two conference tournament championship game appearances. Her name is littered throughout the records books at CUW and for the conference. Her efforts helped CUW to a .797 winning percentage in conference play and a .771 winning percentage inside the R. John Buuck Field House.
She was named the 2013-14 conference Player of the Year and was a three-time all-league first team selection. In addition, Luethe was named the league's Freshman of the Year in 2010-11. She also was named the conference's Player of the Week three times.
Luethe tallied 1,439 points, which ranks sixth in CUW history (fifth in league history) and grabbed 714 rebounds, good for sixth in CUW history (eighth in league history). She is also top-10 in conference history for games started (108, – tied for first), field goals made (556 – fifth), defensive rebounds (525 – seventh) and minutes played (3,278 – eighth). She scored in double-figures in 83-of-110 career games and finished with 14 double-doubles.
