Falcon weekend preview, four teams competing for championships

MEQUON, Wis. – Four Concordia University Wisconsin teams will be competing for conference championships this weekend while several other teams will be in action from Friday through Sunday.

Concordia University Wisconsin's women's basketball team aims for its third Northern Athletics Conference Championship Saturday night. The Falcons will take on Wisconsin Lutheran College at the Recreation Complex in Milwaukee, Wis. at 7 p.m. CUW advanced to the title game by defeating Maranatha Baptist Bible College, 47-40, in a semifinal contest Thursday night. A fan bus is being offered for free for students who wish to attend Saturday's championship.

The CUW wrestling team will take part in the five-team Northern Wrestling Association Tournament hosted by Maranatha. The Falcons went 3-0 in conference dual matches during the regular season, all three matches coming since February 8. Sophomores Sean Ambrocio (San Antonio, Texas) and Greg Sanders (San Antonio, Texas) continue to lead the charge for CUW. Sanders has won 24 straight matches and is ranked sixth by d3wrestle.com, while Ambrocio is the eighth-ranked wrestler at 125 lbs.

The men's track & field team is looking to repeat as Northern Athletics Conference champions as it competes in the NAC Indoor Championships Saturday. Junior Martin Hinze (Bourbonnais, Ill.) enters the meet ranked first in the conference in both the mile and the 3,000-meter run. Last season CUW won the indoor title by scoring 126 points. Aurora earned runner-up honors with 109.

The women's track & field team will also compete in the NAC Indoor Championships Saturday, trying to improve upon its second-place finish in 2012. The women finished just 2.5 points behind Concordia University Chicago. The 4X400-meter relay team of Jessica Hennig (Springfield, Ill.), Kristin Sitte (Greenfield, Wis.), Larissa Schlitz (DeForest, Wis.), and Emily Mauerman (Janesville, Wis.) ranks first in the NAC heading into the meet.

Men's tennis will aim for its first win of the season Friday evening as it takes on UW-Oshkosh. The Falcons have opened their season with a challenging slate, playing St Mary's University and Lawrence University in their first two matches of the season.

The men's lacrosse team opens its 2013 campaign with a pair of games. CUW will play Calvin Friday night at 7 p.m. before taking on Ohio Wesleyan Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Last season the Falcons went 9-7, including posting a 5-4 mark in conference play. They are predicted to finish second in the Midwest Lacrosse Conference this season.

Concordia University Wisconsin softball will start its schedule with four games this weekend in Marquette, Mich. The Falcons open with No. 16 Carthage College and Simpson College, a team receiving votes, Saturday morning. CUW will then take on a pair of WIAC schools in UW-La Crosse and UW-Stevens Point Sunday afternoon. CUW posted a 25-16 overall record in 2012, including finishing third in the NAC with a 19-5 mark.
