Falcon weekend preview, six teams in action Friday and Saturday

MEQUON, Wis. – Six Concordia University Wisconsin teams are scheduled to compete this weekend, highlighted by the wrestling team who will be taking part in the NCAA Division III West Regional Saturday in Minneapolis.

The Falcon wrestlers will take to the mats at Augsburg College as individuals try and earn their way to the NCAA Division III Championships, scheduled for March 15 at Cornell and Coe College. CUW won the Northern Wrestling Association Tournament last weekend, and had five wrestlers capture individual titles. Sophomore Greg Sanders (San Antonio, Texas) was named Outstanding Wrestler and he will try and continue his 26-match winning streak Saturday.

The track & field teams will compete both Friday and Saturday as they take part in a pair of final qualifier meets. The athletes will be attempting to post times and distances good enough to qualify for the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships next weekend. CUW will visit the Gill Athletics Final Qualifier, hosted by Carthage College, Friday, before taking part in the Pointer Final Qualifier Saturday. Freshman Tyler White (Milwaukee, Wis.) of the men's team is ranked in the top 50 in the nation in both the long and triple jumps, ranking 23rd in the long jump, and 42nd in the triple. Athletes need to be in the top 13 for the men and top 15 for the women to qualify for the national meet.

The men's lacrosse team continues its seven-game road stretch to begin the 2013 campaign Friday night when they battle against No. 11 Denison University (1-1). CUW (1-1) defeated Calvin College, 18-1, in its season-opening game, setting a program record for goals in road game. The Falcons then fell 13-6 against Ohio Wesleyan University, a team receiving votes in the USILA Coaches' Poll.

Men's tennis will host the College of St. Scholastica Friday evening at the Paley Tennis Center. CUW (0-3) and the Saints (5-0) are scheduled to play at 8 p.m. Last weekend the Falcons fell to UW-Oshkosh, 8-1, with junior Russell Johnson (Monticello, Wis.) earning a victory at No. 2 singles.

CUW women's tennis will also be playing the College of St. Scholastica Friday, as they will meet at 6 p.m. The match will mark the first of the spring season for CUW after posting a 9-2 record during the fall season. The Falcons will play in 11 non-conference dual matches this spring before their Apr. 29th NAC First Round matchup against Aurora University.
