2018-19 Stories of the Year (No. 1): Men's Lacrosse had a remarkable season
MEQUON, Wis. -- The 2018-19 athletic year was another successful one for the Concordia Wisconsin Athletic Department. The Falcons won and contended for conference championships in many sports and put together an impressive list of great achievements. As in years past, the Department of Athletic Communications tries to sort through all the great moments and give you, the fans, top stories from the past year.
The list of stories was compiled by the Department of Athletic Communications and, like all lists, is subject to debate. The top stories will be revealed over the next three weeks, with a story being released on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The top story will be released on June 20.
No. 1 Story of the Year
Men's Lacrosse had a remarkable season
As the final horn sounded the Concordia Wisconsin student body rushed the field to celebrate with its Men's Lacrosse program as they won the Midwest Lacrosse Conference Tournament Championship for the first time in program history. The final score read 9-7 (game recap) in favor of the Falcons, with the victory coming over its rival Aurora, who had their number in previous years.
This 2019 season had a different feeling from the onset, as 14 seniors were determined to check off a number of goals. They did just that when they won the MLC regular season outright, then the MLC Tournament Championship and finally a bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. While just reaching the NCAA Tournament was a step not done before it wasn't good enough for those on the roster. The Falcons were determined for an upset and led Denison, the eighth-ranked team in the country, 2-0 less than three minutes into the game. Denison slowly pulled away, but Concordia Wisconsin was within three goals, 9-6, early in the fourth quarter.
As has been the case every year for the Falcons, their defense was the name of the game. They ranked second nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 6.05 goals per game, while also ranking 14th in man-down defense (.817). In all, 11 players earned All-MLC honors for their efforts on the field. Garrett Wohlford (Rochester, Minnesota) was named MLC Defensive Player of the Year, IMLCA All-West Region First Team and USILA All-America Honorable Mention.
Concordia Wisconsin set numerous records throughout the season -- including a program-record 15 wins -- but more importantly, the standard of success has risen for future Falcons that enter the program. Looking back they didn't lose a game in MLC play, went a perfect 9-0 at home and doubled up the opposition on the scoreboard on average throughout the season.
It's safe to say Men's Lacrosse had a memorable season and one that is worthy of being the top story from the 2018-19 Concordia Wisconsin athletic year.
