Falcon stat of the week, by the numbers
STAT OF THE WEEK (1) – Concordia University Wisconsin sophomore wrestler Greg Sanders became the first national champion in program history as he captured the 149 lb. championship at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships. Sanders (San Antonio, Texas) defeated defending 141 lb. national champion Kodie Silvestri of Wartburg College, 6-5, in the finals, using a late reversal to help him gain the victory. He was named Most Outstanding Wrestler at the meet by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
4 – Russell Johnson (Monticello, Wis.) has won four straight singles matches for the CUW Men's Tennis team since beginning his season Feb. 22 against UW-Oshkosh. Johnson won his first of those four at No. 2 singles but has since slid into the No. 1 spot and won three straight. The most challenging of the four came last Friday against Adrian College where he rallied to a 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), 1-0 (7-5) victory over Jordan Verbauwhede.
4 – Men's Lacrosse has won four-straight games over the last 10 days. The Falcons have won by a combined score of 44-22. The winning streak is tied for the second longest in program history, which happened last season in mid-March. CUW put together a six-game winning streak during its inaugural 2011 season. During the current streak, a total of 15 players have found the back of the net.
6 – The CUW Softball team begins its Florida trip Friday and will play six of its 10 games against teams who ended the 2012 season regionally ranked. Three of those teams are currently ranked in the latest NFCA Coaches Poll, including No. 6 Eastern Connecticut State, who the Falcons will play in their second game.
8 – Women's Lacrosse was on attack during its season opening 18-7 victory over Fontbonne University and set or tied eight game records in the process. The team set or tied game records for points (22), goals (18), assists (4), shots (38) and draw control wins (21). Sophomore Sammi Reiter (Stillwater, Minn.) broke individual game records for goals (8) and points (8), while sophomore Emily Heckendorf (Merrill, Wis.) set a new game record for draw control wins (9).
104 – The number of combined innings Andrew Mueller (Horicon, Wis.) and Austin Baglow (Walled Lake, Mich.) combined to throw for the CUW Baseball team last year. Mueller and Baglow, both juniors in 2013, return as two of the top pitchers on the Falcons staff this season. Mueller won three games and added two saves in 2012, while Baglow earned three victories and struck out a team-best 34 batters.
