This weekend in Falcon athletics, Nov. 9-10

MEN’S HOCKEY
This weekend: CUW takes on Lake Forest College (1-2-0, 1-1-0 MCHA) in a home-and-home series. The Falcons host the Foresters on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Ozaukee Ice Center before traveling south for a 7 p.m. matchup at Lake Forest.

Last Week: The Falcons enter this weekend’s matchup against the Foresters with great confidence after sweeping conference foe Lawrence University last weekend in a home-and-home series. CUW won the first meeting 3-2 Friday evening (November 2nd) and capped off the series sweep in Appleton 3-2 after pilling on three goals in the final stanza to seal the victory.

Need to know: Earlier in the week, goalkeeper Jake Hebda was named Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Week. The freshman standout helped CUW (2-3-0, 2-2-0 MCHA) to a two-game series sweep over Lawrence University this past weekend. The Firestone, Colo., native stopped 31 shots during Friday's 3-2 home victory before recording 29 saves in Saturday's 3-2 road victory. Hebda had a .937 save percentage and 60 total saves to complete his impressive weekend.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY
This weekend: The Falcons will host the Pointers of UW-Stevens Point (3-1-0, 2-1-0 MCHA) for a home series. Both of the games will be played at the Ozaukee Ice Center with Friday’s match-up taking place at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday’s contest taking place at 2:30 p.m.

Last Week: CUW returns home after a tough away series against the Saints of St. Scholastica. The Falcons went to overtime for the first time this season last Friday evening (November 2nd), eventually tying the Saints 4-4. The tie was followed by a loss at the hands of the CSS 8-1.

Need to know: The Falcons will look to improve on capitalizing during their power play opportunities this weekend against the Pointers. Of the power play opportunities so far this season; CUW has only converted 3 out of 22.

FOOTBALL
This weekend: CUW (6-3, 5-1 NAC) hosts Wisconsin Lutheran College (7-2, 5-1 NAC) for the 5th Annual Luther Cup. The Falcons and Warriors are also playing for sole possession of second play in the Northern Athletics Conference at 12 p.m. at Tomasini Stadium. CUW will honor the senior class prior to the game.

Last week: Sophomore quarterback Austin Damaschke (Bristol, Wis.) had a career game throwing 390 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Falcons to a 45-31 victory at Aurora University. Damaschke also rushed for a score to earn NAC Offensive Player of the Week honors. Sophomore wide receiver Garrett Wenzelburger (Hartland, Wis.) caught eight passes for a career-best 148 yards and three touchdowns. Junior John Palese (West Bend, Wis.), along with freshmen Markhail Bell (Titusville, Fla.) and Ryan Edleman (Fort Myers, Fla.) each intercepted a pass.

Need to Know: Damaschke appears to be the front-runner for NAC Offensive Player of the Year with his 2,236 yards passing, 64.5 completion percentage, 24-to-5 touchdown-to-interception ratio, team-leading 234 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, senior Matt Upson (New Berlin, Wis.) is in the running for NAC Defensive Player of the Year with his 95 total tackles, which is third in the NAC. He also has 0.5 sacks, nine tackles for loss, a forced fumble and four pass breakups.

WRESTLING
This weekend:
CUW (1-0) travels to Luther College for the Luther College Open on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. Last year the Falcons didn’t compete in the tournament.

Last Week: The Falcons cruised to a 35-9 victory at No. 27 North Central College on Wednesday evening. CUW received wins by fall from freshman 141-pounder Allen Fenner (Watertown, Wis.), sophomore 149-pounder Greg Sanders (San Antonio, Texas) and 197-pounder sophomore Jake Reuteler (New Berlin, Wis.).

Need to Know: CUW lost just two bouts on Wednesday, both in the upper weight divisions. The roster features 13 returners from a team that had three wrestlers – Sean Ambrocio (San Antonio, Texas), Sanders and senior Marcus Lubner (Fredonia, Wis.) – win Northern Wrestling Association titles.

CROSS COUNTRY
This weekend:
CUW competes in the NCAA Division III Regionals at Lake Breeze Golf Course, hosted by UW-Oshkosh. The Falcons will have seven runners competing for both the men’s and women’s teams.

Last Week: The Falcons had a week off from competition, but ran at the Northern Athletics Conference Championships the week prior. The men’s team placed 4th out of 10 teams, while the women took 3rd out of 11 teams. Sophomore Andrew Coop (Mora, Minn.) led the men’s team with a  sixth place finish after running 26:54.81, while freshman Larissa Schlitz (DeForest, Ill.) led the women’s team with a 15th place finish after crossing the finish line in 24:46.87.

Need to Know: Coop ran his career best at the NAC Championships to lead the Falcons. Sophomore Robert Meilbeck (Winthrop Harbor, Ill.) also ran a career best at the NAC Championships. Freshman Jolyn Achs (Gurnee, Ill,), freshman Kaitlyn Kramer (Berlin, Wis.) and freshman Elizabeth Small (Caseyville, Ill.) ran career bests for the women at the NAC Championsips.
