2014 Falcons Year in Review
MEQUON, Wis. – The 2014 year for Concordia University Wisconsin's Athletic Department has come to a close and it was another successful year for the Falcons. CUWFalcons.com takes a look at some of the numbers and statistics in its 2014 Year in Review.
203 – In sports that measure wins and losses, the Falcons gained 203 victories from January to December. Four teams, Women's Basketball (21), Baseball (23), Softball (24) and Volleyball (24), won more than 20 games in 2014.
66 – The Falcons had 66 student-athletes named to All-Conference Teams in 2014. That list includes all players who were chosen to First Team, Second Team, or Honorable Mention in their respective conferences. Football had 11 student-athletes earn All-Conference accolades, while Men's Lacrosse had nine players earn All-League honors.
13 – In addition to the 66 All-Conference players, CUW produced 13 who were named to All-Freshman Teams. Baseball had the most of any on an All-Freshman team, with four players being selected.
6 – Six players were named All-Region in 2014. Women's Soccer placed the most on an All-Region team with a program-record three selections. Carley Pfannerstill became the first Women's Soccer player in Falcons history to earn First Team All-Region honors, while Ashley Apazeller (Third Team) became the program's first three-time All-Region selection. Brittany Klumpp earned Second Team honors, while Sammi Reiter (Women's Lacrosse), Mariah Giesseman (Softball) and Katie Luethe (Women's Basketball) also were recognized by the region. In addition, freshman Ashley Jehlicka (Volleyball), was named the AVCA All-Midwest Region Freshman of the Year in the fall.
6 – The Falcons had six student-athletes earn Conference Player of the Year honors. It began with Sean Ambrocio (Wrestling), Katie Luethe (Women's Basketball) and Martin Hinze (Indoor Track & Field) during the close of the 2013-14 winter season. Sammi Reiter (Women's Lacrosse) was named Offensive Player of the Year in the spring, while Austin Damaschke (Football) and Nina Puch (Women's Golf) each earned their second consecutive Player of the Year honors this fall.
3 – It was a good year for Falcons rookies as well, as three were named Freshmen of the Year in their respective conferences. Baseball rookie pitcher Andrew Heideman was named the Freshman of the Year last spring, while Bethany Coop (Women's Cross Country) and Ashley Jehlicka (Volleyball) garnered Freshman of the Year honors this fall.
1 – Sean Ambrocio had another outstanding year, culminating in his first All-American honor in Wrestling. Ambrocio placed eighth in the 125-pound weight bracket at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Champions, marking the second straight year in which CUW produced an All-American on the mat (Greg Sanders – 2013).
