Falcon stat of the week, by the numbers

STAT OF THE WEEK: Concordia University Wisconsin junior distance runner Martin Hinze (Bourbonnais, Ill.) owns the top mile time heading into Saturday's Northern Athletics Conference Outdoor Championships. Hinze ran a 4:24.93 at the UW-Madison Red & White Open to earn the top seed for the conference meet. He also owns the top 3,000-meter time of 8:58.47, as he recorded that mark at the Carthage Tadd Metzger Invitational January 25. Hinze and the Falcons will try and repeat as NAC Champions this weekend.

4:19.64 – Concordia University Wisconsin's women's track & field team has the top 4X400-meter relay team entering the NAC Indoor Championships. The foursome of Jessica Hennig (Springfield, Ill.), Kristin Sitte (Greenfield, Wis.), Larissa Schlitz (DeForest, Wis.), and Emily Mauerman (Janesville, Wis.) posted that time at the Karl Schlender Invitational January 19. Last season at the NAC Indoor Championships, the CUW women placed second, finishing two points behind Concordia University Chicago.

7 – The Falcons men's hockey team won seven games this season, setting the mark for most wins in program history. All seven of the CUW wins came in conference games. The future looks bright for the Falcons as 2012-2013 was the first campaign under head coach Jasen Wise.

11 – The CUW softball team returns three players who hit 11 of the team's 16 home runs in 2012. Seniors Abbie Goetsch (Grayslake, Ill.) and Cara Landherr (Waukesha, Wis.) each sent five pitches flying over the outfield wall last year, while junior Mariah Giesseman (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) added one. The Falcons begin their 2013 schedule Saturday against No. 16 Carthage College at 8:45 a.m.

13.0 – Concordia University Wisconsin's women's basketball team ranks fourth in the country in turnovers per game, giving up the ball just 13 times per contest. The Falcons rank first in the NAC in turnovers and have committed 10 or less turnovers five times this season.

20 – Concordia University Wisconsin's women's hockey team featured a youthful squad in 2012-2013 as 20 of the teams 23 players were freshman or sophomores. CUW posted a 5-17-3 record, including earning a season-ending victory over UW-Eau Claire Saturday.

24 – Sophomore Greg Sanders (San Antonio, Texas) of the CUW wrestling team has won 24 straight matches dating back to the CUW Open November 17. Sanders, who owns a 32-2 record, has won nine of those 24 matches by pin, including six in the first period. He is ranked sixth in the 149 lb. weight class by d3wrestle.com.

121 – Senior center Steve Zielinski (Brown Deer, Wis.) of the Falcons men's basketball team finished his career with 121 blocked shots. That number ranks him second in NAC history. He has blocked 71 shots this season and has recorded three or more in 13 games. Zielinski posted a career-high nine blocks against Marian University January 15.
