2014-15 Stories of the Year (No. 2): Women's Lacrosse dominates MWLC

MEQUON, Wis. - The 2014-15 athletic year was another successful one for Concordia University Wisconsin. The Falcons had a multitude of wins, memorable moments and impressive performances en route to more championships and awards. The CUW Athletic Communications Department again tries to sort through all the great moments and give you, the fans, the top five stories from the year, as well as an honorable mention story.

The list of stories was compiled by both the Athletic Communications Department and a committee of coaches, and like all lists is subject to debate. The list of top stories will be revealed over the next six weeks with a story being released each Tuesday. The No. 1 story from the 2014-15 athletics season will be released next Tuesday, July 21.

No. 2 Story of the Year

CUW has come a long ways in just five years. In 2011, the first year the Falcons competed in the sport, they didn't win a game, and year two followed with just three wins.

The Falcons continued to show steady improvement over the next two seasons, before reaching new heights in 2015. A program-record 13 wins were a part of the 2015 campaign, but also a dominance of the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference and an appearance in the 2015 NCAA Division III Tournament were on the list of accomplishments this past season.

What was perhaps most impressive about the 2015 campaign for CUW was how easy it looked in conference play. During seven regular season league games, the Falcons outscored their opponents 123-28. They would continue that run in the MWLC Tournament, winning two games by a combined score of 40-10, including a 17-7 win over Aurora in the MWLC Tournament Championship game.

From there, CUW advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament, facing a highly-ranked Augustana team. The Falcons fell against the Vikings by a 19-13 score, ending the best season in program history.

The Falcons also had several individual accolades during the record-setting season. Hannah Redden was named the MWLC Offensive Player of the Year, while Allison Kurek earned the league's Rookie of the Year honors, in addition to being a All-Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-Central Region First Team selection.

CUW ended up placing four players on the All-MWLC First Team, while another four earned Second Team honors. Emily Mason Schessow was also named the MWLC Coach of the Year, as the Falcons brought home three of the four major awards for the league.

It has been a steady climb for CUW since they began in the spring of 2011. The 2015 season has been their most impressive, but if the Falcons continue to improve who knows what new achievements they can reach in 2016 and beyond.
