2019-20 Stories of the Year (HM): Dominate victories

MEQUON, Wis. -- The 2019-20 athletic year was another successful one for the Concordia Wisconsin Athletic Department. The Falcons won and contended for conference championships in many sports and put together an impressive list of great achievements. As in years past, the Department of Athletic Communications tries to sort through all the great moments and give you, the fans, top stories from the past year.

The list of stories was compiled by the Department of Athletic Communications and, like all lists, is subject to debate. The top stories will be revealed over the next three weeks, with a story being released on Monday, Wednesday and Friday every week until the top story is released on May 20.

Honorable Mention: Dominate victories

Concordia Wisconsin has always had strong athletics and this past year was no different, as they won championships, won numerous games and showed their ability to dominate on occasion. Of the many sizeable victories compiled by the Falcons during the 2019-20 season, two stand out above the rest. The Football team shutdown Augsburg, 31-0, during its first road game of the season, while Women's Basketball had a record-setting 102-39 victory at Rockford.

On September 14 the Falcons made their longest trip of the season to Minneapolis to compete against Augsburg in a non-conference game and the defense rose to the occasion in spectacular fashion. They limited the Auggies to just six first downs and forced three turnovers. They also held them to 1-of-13 on third-down conversions and 57 total yards. A defensive performance like that hadn't been seen in a number of years and the scoring began when Dwayne Rackard III picked up a loose ball after Connor Stoming recorded a sack-fumble deep in Augsburg territory, which he returned for a touchdown.

Concordia Wisconsin picked off a pass and held Augsburg to -13 net rushing yard, which included three sacks for 39 yards. Prior to the win, the Auggies held an 8-1 record in the series that dated back to 2010. If was the first shutout of the series and the sixth under head coach Greg Etter.

Less than five months later on the hardwood in Rockford, Illinois, the Women's Basketball team had a game for the record books with a 102-39 conference victory over Rockford. During the victory, they set the program record for points in a game (102), 3-pointers made (16) and assists (30). The Falcons had six players score in double-figures and no player logged more than 28 minutes.

The Falcons charged out of the gates with a 28-11 lead after the opening quarter and led 48-20 by the intermission. They scored the most points in a quarter all season when they put 32 on the board during the third period on 13-of-18 shooting (72.2 percent). Just once before in program history had they topped 100 points (100-16 win at Silver Lake November 21, 2006) and the record-setting field goal came with 1:21 to play when Brianna Freund sank a 3-pointer. Taylor Guns later added a free-throw with 46 seconds to play to put 102 on the scoreboard.

The Football and Women's Basketball victories were just a few of the many dominant victories the Falcons accumulated during the 2019-20 season.
