Super Smash Bros Ultimate Takes Strides in 2021-22 Season

MEQUON, Wis. – The CUW Super Smash Bros Ultimate team put in the work over the 2021-22 season with a pair of teams in the META 3v3 Crew Battle League.

Trio one consisted of sophomore Angel Uriostegui (Round Lake, Ill.), junior De'Shawn Ford (Gardena, Calif.), and senior Kurtis Polodna (North Prairie, Wis.). Trio two was headlined by freshmen Hellen Gonzales (Waukesha, Wis.) and Sam Goebel (Bayside, Wis.) as well as senior Joseph Struble (Mesa, Ariz.).

Trio one claimed a pair of third-place finishes in the META league with Trio two claiming a pair of fourth-place finishes. The two teams claimed two of the four available spots in the META playoffs.

The team also founded their new series of tournaments known as the Falcon Fight Night (FFN). It turned out to be the largest tournament in Wisconsin with three separate tournament dates. The team was able to gain experience by playing against many of the top players in the state.

Coach Lewis Smith had this to say about the season, "Getting 2 Trios into the Top 4 of META again is nice, but our focus this semester was improving our offline play. This season was a massive success because I was able to see our team improve drastically in a bunch of different ways. I saw them improve as players through our intense practices with each other, but I saw them all improve as people as well with how we were able to host such amazing events. Events like Falcon Fight Night are the epitome of Smash Bros, and this amazing group of students is how those dream events were able to become reality."

The Super Smash Bros Ultimate team will return in the 2022-23 season looking to grow into bigger and better things.
