Mid-Season Review: Valorant, Smash Bros, League of Legends

By Josh Klausmeier

The Concordia University Wisconsin esports team is making a big name and impact as they reach the half-way point of their Fall season. For the Valorant, Smash Bros, and League of Legends teams, most of them participate in both the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) and Maryland Esports Training Arena (META).

Valorant, one of the newer, competitive titles for the esports squad, is making a name for itself in the NECC league. They are commanding a strong 4-1 record with three games left to play before playoffs. However, they have a 1-4 record in the META league and the team is using their losses to learn and grow stronger. Valorant Coach Jack Slater had this to say about their mid-season standing, "As we sit now in NECC I'm extremely happy about how the team has come together. We're meshing and really forming into a completely coordinated group. We're continuing to grow together and making a name for CUW esports."

The Super Smash Bros team is dominating in their META league as we reach the mid-season point. Smash Bros team A is demanding a strong, undefeated record with no signs of slowing down. Smash Bros team B is also making a strong path with a 4-1 record. However, in the Collegiate Smash League (CSL), the team had a struggling winless record, but don't let that discourage you. They take every game as a lesson to grow from. Junior team captain DJ Ford (Gardena, Calif.) told me, "We've had a few tough losses so far, but we have managed to bounce back and keep fighting for victories each week."

The League of Legends team, led by junior team captain Trevor Krentz (Berlin, Wis.), is also having a strong start to a great season as they are 2-1 in the NECC league. The team had spent all summer preparing, learning, and practicing to dominate and take their spot as number one, and they are on their way to do so. The road gets a lot more demanding in the stretch run of the season though, starting with a double-header next week against Lees-McRae and Butler.
