Falcons Sink Sabres For Third-Straight Victory

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The CUW men's basketball team extended its winning streak to three games with an 87-80 victory. The Falcons avenged a loss to the Sabres last week to return to .500 on the year at 9-9 on the year and moved into fourth place in the NACC standings at 8-5.

The Sabres jumped out to an early 11-4 lead behind three three-point baskets. The Falcons stormed back with a 9-0 run to take the lead. The run was anchored by five points from senior Jordan Johnson (Cedarburg, Wis.).

The two teams exchanged the lead back and forth until the game was tied at 25. Junior Jared Jurss (Sheboygan, Wis.) drained a three-point basket and the Falcons never looked back from there.

The Falcons pushed the lead up to seven points in the first half and went into the locker room with a 41-35 lead.

CUW notched shots from senior Garrett Hoffmann (Belgium, Wis.) to push the biggest lead of the night to 11 points on two separate occasions.

The Sabres continued to claw back and cut the deficit to 64-61 with 8:07 left in the game.

The Falcons responded with a three-point basket from sophomore Matt LeVene (Manitowoc, Wis.) and a pair of free throws from Jordan Johnson to earn some separation.

The Blue and White had their shots in the final minutes of play and stopped the Sabres on their last two possessions to secure the victory.

Jordan Johnson led the flock with 22 points in the victory. He also added nine rebounds and two assists.

The Falcons dominated the glass again on Wednesday and outrebounded Marian, 42-30.

Senior Brandon Keller (Plymouth, Wis.) notched another double-double performance with a game-high 14 rebounds and 10 points.

Garrett Hoffmann slayed the Sabres with 18 points, including a three-point dagger late in the game and two free throws in the final minute of the game.   

CUW shared the ball well again in the victory with 15 assists. Eight Falcons added an assist led by Jared Jurss and sophomore Sam Meerstein (Green Bay, Wis.) with three. Jurss also scored 11 points and inched closer to the NACC career assists record, where he is now 13 away.

The Falcons will rest up and host the leaders of the NACC in St. Norbert on Wednesday.
