Falcons Shine in Record-Breaking Win Over Dominican

MEQUON, Wis. – It was all Falcons on Wednesday night as Concordia Wisconsin downed Dominican with a 113-56 victory. The Falcons improve to 7-9 on the year and are back to a winning record in NACC play at 6-5.

"It was great to see some of our younger players get rewarded for all of their hard work in practice," said head coach Shawn Cassidy. "I was impressed by their effort and execution."

It was all Concordia from the very start on Wednesday as the Blue and White jumped out to an early 12-0 run. Senior Brandon Keller (Plymouth, Wis.) scored six of the 12 points to jump out of the gate.

The Falcons scored a season-high 51 points in the first half. Brandon Keller led the flock with 16 points in the half. Senior Jordan Johnson (Cedarburg, Wis.) followed behind with 12 points. CUW scored 38 points in the paint.

CUW did not hit a three-point basket until junior Jared Jurss (Sheboygan, Wis.) drained a shot with 6:11 left in the first half.

The Blue and White had 11 different players score in the second half and had the biggest lead of the night up to 59 points. CUW finished the half with a season-high 62 points, the most in any half this season.

Sophomore Austin Thur (Bloomer, Wis.) scored his first point as a Falcon and finished with five points.

The Falcons broke the school record with 34 assists in the victory. Concordia had 10 different players with an assist, led by Jared Jurss with six. Sophomore Freeman Jackson (Green Bay, Wis.), senior Joey Zietlow (Oak Creek, Wis.) and Jordan Johnson all had five assists.

CUW also had the second-most field goals and rebound in program history with 46 and 61 respectively.

Brandon Keller led the flock with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Jordan Johnson landed 19 points, senior Garrett Hoffmann (Belgium, Wis.) had 16 points and sophomore Matt LeVene (Manitowoc, Wis.) and Freeman Jackson added 12 points each in the victory.

Junior Grant Karsten (Decatur, Ill.) finished with a career-high 10 rebounds.

Concordia shot a season-best 57.7% from beyond the three-point line on Wednesday. Garett Hoffmann led all players with four on the night.

CUW finished with 13 players scoring with Brandon Keller, Freeman Jackson, Joey Zietlow, Garrett Hoffmann, Jordan Johnson, Jared Jurss, sophomore Zech Hans (Oconomowoc, Wis.), Matt LeVene, sophomore Keghan Tighe (West Bend, WIs.), Grant Karsten, sophomore Sam Meerstein (Green Bay, Wis.), Austin Thur, and junior Hunter Auchtung (Ripon, WIs.) all scoring. Junior Michael Cruger, senior Alex Armstrong (Waukesha, Wis.) and junior Gabe Pruss (North Fond du Lac, Wis.) all added either an assist or rebound.

The Falcons did a good job of taking care of the ball and only gave up a season-low seven turnovers. The seven turnovers are the least since the Falcons only gave up six against Wartburg on Dec. 21, 2019.

The 113 points are the fifth most in program history. This is the highest-scoring game for the Falcons since the Blue and White broke the school record against Concordia Chicago on Feb. 20, 2016.

Not only did the Falcons control the glass with 61 rebounds, two short of the school record, the Blue and White dominated the paint with 58 points.

CUW looks to keep the good times rolling on Saturday against Aurora.
