Men’s Basketball drains record 17 3-pointers in victory

MEQUON, Wis. - Luke Doedens had a career day from behind the arc with seven 3-pointers and the Concordia University Wisconsin men's basketball team drained a record-tying 17 3-pointers in an 89-63 victory over Concordia University Chicago during Northern Athletics Conference play inside the R. John Buuck Field House on Saturday afternoon.

CUW's 17 3-pointers made tied a team record for a single game, which was set against Concordia Missouri during the 2001-02 season. It took the Falcons nearly 10 minutes before they heated up and made six 3-pointers during a 4:36 stretch in the first half to turn a two-point deficit into an eight-point lead.

Doedens (senior, Cedarburg ,Wis.) and senior Zach Neumann (Germantown, Wis.) led the onslaught in the opening half with four long balls apiece, as CUW built a 49-34 halftime lead and never looked back.

While the first half was the Doedens and Neumann show, the second period was senior Mitchell Schneider's (New Holstein, Wis.) turn to shine. He drained four 3-pointers and scored 19 second half points as CUW (3-1, 1-0 NAC) increased its lead to as many as 27 points before the final horn sounded.

The Falcons finished 52.4 percent from the field, including 17-for-34 from behind the arc. CUW's ball movement was superb as it assisted on 22-of-33 field goals in the win.

Doedens led all players with 26 points, to go along with six rebounds and six assists for the Falcons. Schneider concluded the game with 23 points, while Neumann scored 14 off the bench. Schneider and senior Matt Paluchniak (Ooostburg) each finished with five assists.

CUC (0-4, 0-1 NAC) was led by Issa Avery who scored 21 points - 16 of which he scored in the opening 20 minutes. Khirey Floyd scored 19 points of his own. The Cougars shot just 13-of-22 from the free throw line.

The Falcons jumped out to a quick 12-6 lead in the first 4:10 before the Cougars chipped away and took their second lead of the game on a Justin Hineman 3-pointer to give CUC a 19-17 advantage.

CUW responded and after its 3-point barrage took a 49-34 lead into the locker rooms at the intermission. Doedens and Neumann scored 15 and 14 points, respectively, for the Falcons at the break. Avery led all scorers with 16 points in the opening 20 minutes.

The Cougars got to within seven points with 13:59 remaining in the game, but would get no closer as the Falcons used a 22-7 run over a seven minute span to put the game out of reach.

CUW finished the game with a 22-10 advantage in point off turnovers and a 30-7 lead in bench production.

The Falcons return to the court on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. road matchup with Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee, Wis.
