Men’s Basketball holds on for non-conference win over UW-Oshkosh

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. - A 13-4 scoring run over the final seven minutes gave Concordia University Wisconsin's men's basketball team a 76-72 non-conference victory over UW-Oshkosh on Thursday night at Just A Game Field House.

CUW controlled the middle portion of the contest and led by 14 points in the early stages of the second half, the largest lead by either team in the game, before UW-O responded. The Titans used a 32-13 scoring run over an 11:44 span to take a five-point advantage with less than seven minutes to play.
With the game in limbo, CUW put the defense clamps on UW-O down the stretch and forced four turnovers and held the Titans to 2-of-9 shooting from the field. On the offensive end of the court seniors David Lopez (Chicago, Ill.) and Matt Paluchniak (Oostburg, Wis.) each made a pair of layups, while senior Mitchell Schneider (New Holstein, Wis.) sank 5-of-6 free throws to seal the victory.
"Tonight was a complete team effort on both ends of the floor," head coach Shawn Cassidy said. "We played hard for all 40 minutes and our depth caused UW-Oshkosh problems early in the game. This was a nice victory to get us back in the win column and ready for the NAC schedule again."
The victory was the third of the season over a UW opponent for CUW. The Falcons previously downed UW-La Crosse and UW-Platteville to begin the 2011-12 campaign.
The Falcons (8-3) were able to win the neutral site contest and back-and-forth affair - 12 lead changes and seven scoring ties - behind a balanced scoring attack. Senior Luke Doedens (Cedarburg, Wis.) and Schneider led CUW with 16 points apiece. Paluchniak and Lopez scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, both season-highs.
Seniors Erik Condia (Orange, Calif.) played well with nine points and a season-high-tying nine rebounds, while Nick Doedens (Germantown, Wis.) scored eights points, including two triples.
UW-O (4-7) was paced by John Flanigan's game-high 25 points, including a 9-for-10 performance at the free throw line. Dylan Wurtz and Jade Royston chipped in 13 and 11 points, respectively.
CUW finished the contest with a 36-28 advantage in paint scoring and a 23-15 lead in bench production.
The opening half saw neither team taking control until the Falcons went on a 14-4 scoring over the final 4:40 to take a 45-34 lead at the intermission. During the opening period there were 10 lead changes and five scoring ties.
CUW will have nine days off before traveling to Dominican University on Saturday, Jan. 7 for a Northern Athletics Conference contest at 4:15 p.m. The game is the second part of a doubleheader with the women's team.
