Men’s Basketball wins double overtime thriller

MEQUON, Wis. - Concordia University Wisconsin sure has a flare for the dramatic. In what could be the most exciting basketball game in the Northern Athletics Conference this season, the Falcon men's basketball team walked away with a 106-102 double overtime victory against Lakeland College on Wednesday night inside the R. John Buuck Field House.

CUW has done it before and they did it again Wednesday night, waiting until the last possible moment to stay alive. It was Luke Doedens who saved his best for last again as he drilled a 39-foot, one-footed, banked 3-pointer as time expired in regulation to keep the Falcons breathing.

The heroics continued as Mitchell Schneider drained a 3-pointer from the left wing with 16.6 seconds to play in the first overtime. The Falcons then jumped ahead quickly in the final five minutes of play when Schneider drained a triple seconds into the second overtime to give CUW the lead for good in front of the largest crowd this season, over 1,400 in attendance.

Schneider (New Holstein, Wis.) led CUW (17-5, 12-2 NAC) with 25 points, including three long balls, to go along with seven rebounds, four steals, three blocks and three assists. Doedens added 24 points and nine rebounds.

Junior Brian Jackson (Carol Stream, Ill.) finished the victory with a career-high 21 points, while recording eight rebounds. Senior Zach Neumann (Germantown, Wis.) scored a season-high-tying 14 points off the bench, while grabbing seven rebounds.

Jake Schwarz led LC (16-6, 10-4 NAC) with a game-high 29 points on 11-of-20 shooting. He also grabbed 13 rebounds for one of two Muskie double-doubles. Justin Ward finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Josh Regal concluded the game with 19 points and six assists.

After a CUW led 35-32 with 4:31 remaining in the opening half, LC went on a 19-7 scoring run to take a 51-42 lead at halftime. The Muskies intermission lead was due in large part to the Falcons finishing the half shooting 3-for-11 from the floor.

During the opening 20 minutes of play LC shot a blistering 60.0 percent (21-of-35) from the field, while CUW shot 43.6 percent (17-of-39). Jackson tied a career-high with 15 points, including three 3-pointers, in the first half.

The Muskies continued their run into the second period, taking their largest lead of the game, 12 points with 18:11 to play in regulation. CUW chipped away at its deficit and got it to within a two possession game for the final 12 minutes of the second half until Doedens buzzer beater.

During the first overtime Schwarz sank a jumper and made two free throws to give LC a quick four-point lead 1:21 into the period. The Muskies led the entire first overtime until Schneider sank a game-tying 3-pointer from the left wing with 16.6 seconds to play and extend the game.

Schneider continued his hot shooting with another 3-pointer to begin the second overtime and give CUW a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

There were 10 scoring ties and three lead changes in the contest.

CUW won its last double overtime contest, 94-92, over Aurora University on Dec. 16, 2009. It was also the first overtime game against LC since Jan. 3, 2005 when the Muskies pulled away with an 83-75 win.

In addition, it was also the first time since Jan. 24, 2003 that CUW was involved in a game where both teams surpassed 100 points. The Falcons won that contest 106-104 against Concordia University Ann Arbor, which also happened to be a double overtime contest.

The Falcons remained atop the NAC North Division with the victory and CUW now has a 1.5 game lead over Edgewood College which plays at Maranatha Baptist Bible College tonight. The Falcons host the Eagles next Tuesday.
