Doedens’ 1,000 points has been about growth

MEQUON, Wis. - Luke Doedens' journey to 1,000 points has been harder than he anticipated. The senior guard did not struggle to the milestone, per say, but his journey has been unique. His improvement since joining the Concordia University Wisconsin men's basketball team has been well documented, but it is his highlight reel plays and unselfish team play that impress the crowds.

The 6-foot-5 guard finally reached a personal goal on Saturday afternoon in the second half of the Falcons sixth-straight conference victory, a 71-45 win at Maranatha Baptist Bible College. With 14:38 to play in the win he calmly sank the first of two free throws to join rare company.

During his time in the CUW royal and white, he has filled the scoring column of box scores with staggering numbers. This season his has recorded 10 games of 20-plus points, including a career-high 28-point effort in a victory at Rockford College.

The Cedarburg, Wis., native and team captain leads the team in several statistical categories, including scoring, rebounding and 3-point percentage. The lefty has been, at times, unconscious from downtown making at least three 3-pointers in 11 different contests this season, as well as a pair of games with seven triples.

Since transferring from Winona State University after his sophomore year, he has accumulated 791 points in just 51 games played at CUW. On three occasions this season, the marketing and business student-athlete put together heart-stopping finishes for the Falcons. He sank a pair of free throws with 2.1 seconds to play at Lakeland College less than a month ago for a victory. Then he drained lengthy 3-pointers to send CUW into two home overtime victories eight days apart.

Doedens was named to the Northern Athletics Conference Second Team last season for his efforts in helping CUW to a 23-5 overall record and the first undefeated, 16-0, season in league history. The Falcons also reached the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history a year ago.
