Falcons Smack the Sabres on Senior Day

MEQUON, Wis. – The CUW women's volleyball team celebrated the senior class on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Marian. The Falcons silenced the Sabres with a 25-18, 16-25, 25-11, 25-16 victory to improve to 17-3 and 8-1 in NACC play.

The Falcons jumped on the Sabres early in the first set with the serve of junior Jenna Chaussee (Chilton, Wis.) and never looked back. The Falcons extended the lead to 20-8 with the serve of Annie Marie Olszowka (Bolingbrook, Ill.). Senior Sophia Collins (Lake Mills, Wis.) landed a kill to finish the set at 25-18. Senior McKenna Nigl (Richland Center, Wis.) and sophomore Maycee Karpfinger (Wauwatosa, Wis.) both landed four kills in the set.

The Sabres leveled the match with a victory in the second set to tie the match at one.

The Falcons responded with an 8-1 start to the third set to send the Sabres into a spiral. The Falcons closed the set on a 7-0 run behind the serve of Jenna Chaussee, to win the set at 25-11. Chaussee landed three services aces in the set. Maycee Karpfinger finished the set with seven kills on nine attacks.

The Blue and White went on a 6-0 run to get some separation in the fourth set and push the lead to 18-10. Senior Makenzie Vertz (Mukwonago Wis.) had three service aces in the run. Junior Hannah Himmelman (Geneseo, Ill.) closed the book on Marian with a kill at 25-16.

Maycee Karpfinger led the match with 14 kills.

Hannah Himmelman had a block party with seven blocks in the victory.

Senior Madelyn Alton (Farwell, Minn.) finished with a match-high 21 digs.

The Falcons have now won 14-straight matches, which ties the longest streak on record for the Falcons, tying the runs in 2010 and 2017.

The Falcons honored the senior class on Saturday before the match. The class of Madelyn Alton, Erika Christiansen, Sophia Collins, McKenna Nigl, Annie Marie Olszowka, Gabrielle Pavlik and Makenzie Vertz now have won 69 matches in the career at Concordia Wisconsin.

The Falcons return to play on Tuesday at Wisconsin Lutheran.
