Falcons Freeze the Firebirds

MEQUON, Wis. – The CUW volleyball team brought out the brooms on Tuesday night with a 3-0 victory over Carthage. The victory is the second for CUW over the Firebirds in the last four days after CUW upset No. 24 Carthage, 3-1, at Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Falcons cruised to a 25-21, 25-10, 25-20 victory over the Firebirds.

The Falcons and Firebirds battled until the bitter end in the first set on Tuesday night. The set saw 12 and five lead changes. With the set tied at 20, sophomore Maycee Karpfinger (Wauwatosa, Wis.) broke the tie with an assist from senior Erika Christiansen (Morton Grove, Ill.) and the Falcons never looked back.

The Blue and White made quick work of the Firebirds in the second set with a 25-10 victory. The serve of junior Jenna Chaussee (Chilton, Wis.) and Maycee Karpfinger gave the Firebirds fits and ballooned the lead to 10-3. The Falcons hit .306 in the set.

The Falcons pushed away from the Firebirds with a 7-2 run in the third set tied at 11. The Falcons were led in a balanced attack in the set with four kills from Jenna Chaussee and junior Gabriella Kaebisch (Paddock Lake, Wis.).

CUW landed 12 service aces in the victory. Junior Sierra Lee (Kenosha, Wis.) led the way with four, while Jenna Chaussee and Maycee Karpfinger.

Jenna Chaussee finished with a double-double performance with 10 kills and 10 digs against Carthage.

Maycee Karpfinger hit a blistering .562 with nine kills and two blocks.

The reigning NACC Defensive Player of the Week, senior Madelyn Alton (Farwell, Minn.) led the match with 15 digs.

Makenzie Vertz led the match with 14 digs and right behind her was Sierra Lee with 13.

CUW returns to NACC play on Friday at Rockford.
