Women’s Hockey Shreds Record Book Against Lawrence

MEQUON, Wis. – The Falcons can throw away the record book after the season opener on Tuesday night. The Falcons opened the year with an 11-0 victory to send Lawrence to a 0-3-0 start.

Freshman Amanda Bauer (Waunakee, Wis.) opened the scoring 79 seconds into the game with a deflection off a shot from freshman Katie Rahilly (Newberry, Mich.). Freshman Natalie Mackrell (Stuttgart, Germany) added the secondary assist.

At the 7:57 mark of the first period, senior Baileigh Johnson (Neillsville, Wis.) put the puck away in front of the net, off passes from junior Isabela Noyle (Baltimore, Md.) and sophomore Amanda Carney (Aurora, Ont.).

Freshman Dayna Jones (Juneau, Wis.) scored her first collegiate goal on the power play, off assists from Katie Rahilly and senior Emily Reimche (Billings, Mont.).

Senior Sarah Pearson (South Range, Wis.) pounded the puck into the back of the net on the power play to start the second period scoring off a rebound from Emily Reimche and a senior Sarah Tretina (Plainfield, Ill.) pass.

54 seconds later, Sarah Tretina lit the lamp on the power play on a powerful shot from deep, off passes from senior Kaytlin Johnson (Black River Falls, Wis.) and Baileigh Johnson.

Freshman Brooke Gibson (LaSalle, Ont.) started a streak of first collegiate goals to close the second period after she snuck the puck past the keepers'' right side and connected on passes from Natalie Mackrell and freshman Savanah Hutchins (Inner Grove, Minn.).

Freshman Megan Vettraino (Howell, Mich.) scored 64 seconds later for her first goal as a Falcon on a rebound off a shot from freshman Ashlyn Marshall (Telluride, Colo.). Junior Ali Eiden (Rosemount, Minn.) was given a secondary assist.

32 seconds after the Vettraino goal, Erika Graham lit the lamp off a putback off a Kaytlin Johnson shot and a pass from Katie Rahilly.

Sarah Pearson started the third period scoring eight minutes in when she tipped in a pass from Emily Reimche and a secondary assist to Sarah Tretina.

Pearson then helped the Falcons break the school record for goals in a game three minutes later for the hat trick. Katie Rahilly and Kaytlin Johnson had the assists.

Emily Reimche closed the scoring 20 seconds later on a breakaway off an assist to freshman Erika Graham (Brighton, Mich.).

The Falcons had a program-record 17 players score a point on Tuesday. The Falcons had 17 players score a point last season.

The Blue and White also had a school record of 73 shots on Tuesday. Emily Reimche and Sarah Tretina led the flock with nine.

Junior Annalina Van Hercke (Castle Rock, Colo.) collected her third career shutout with nine saves.

Sarah Pearson led the Falcons with a career-high three goals.

Katie Rahilly collected four assists, one short of tying the school record. Emily Reimche also had a four-point performance.

The Falcons won 51 of the 64 faceoffs on Tuesday, with Emily Reimche winning 19, Baileigh Johnson winning 15 and Brooke Gibson winning 12.

The CUW defense killed off all seven penalties on Tuesday. 

The 11 goals are the most that the Vikings have given up in program history.

The Falcons look to keep the momentum rolling on Friday at St. Benedict.
