Men’s Hockey battles to a draw against Northland

Box Score: CUW 3, NC 3 (OT)

ASHLAND, Wis. - Dustin Jonasson scored with just over two minutes remaining in regulation, and the Concordia University Wisconsin men's hockey team fought to a 3-3 draw against MCHA rival Northland College inside the Bay Area Civic Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons (2-12-3, 2-8-2 MCHA) also got goals from sophomore Russell Johnson (Monticello, Minn.) and freshman Morgan Sanchez (Corona, Calif.), along with 31 saves from junior goaltender Billy Sias (Bloomington, Minn.) en route to the tie.

CUW won the shots on goal battle by a 45-34 margin, and Jonasson, a freshman forward, netted the game-tying goal at 17:43 in the third period after the Lumberjacks (6-8-3, 5-5-2 MCHA) had scored twice in the final frame to take a 3-2 lead.

Johnson got things going for the Falcons just 11 seconds into the first period, scoring his team-leading 12th goal of the season off feeds from sophomore captain Shay Klitzke (Annandale, Minn.) and junior Jake Furey (Cedarburg, Wis.).

After Colin McIntosh tied the game at 1-1 less than three minutes later, Sanchez regained the lead for CUW following assists from Jonasson and senior Mark Henke (Cando, N.D.).

The Falcons' 2-1 lead stood up until early in the third period, when Austin Southerland scored twice in almost three minutes to put the Lumberjacks in front.

But Jonasson (West Fargo, N.D.) scored the game's final goal with just a few minutes to go in regulation, as Sanchez assisted on the play.

The two teams played a five-minute overtime period, but neither side could find the net.

CUW will now return home for a week of practice before playing a "home-and-home" series with Lake Forest College next weekend.
