MEQUON, Wis. -- Concordia University Wisconsin
men's hockey head coach Tony Hrkac announced that the historic
Stanley Cup will make a stop at the Ozaukee Ice Center on Saturday,
Jan.14. The Cup will be
at the OIC from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.
Admission
and photo opportunities will be $10 for adults/seniors/and children
10 and older. Kids under 10 will be admitted for $5. Admission is
for cup viewing/photos and the CUW men's hockey game vs. Finlandia
University at 2:00 p.m. Cash or checks only (checks should be made
out to CUW or Concordia University Wisconsin).
The storied Cup has been awarded annually to
the National Hockey League (NHL) champion after the conclusion of
the Stanley Cup Finals since 1926.
Unlike the trophies awarded by the other three major
professional sports leagues of North America, a new Stanley Cup is
not made each year; winning team members have an opportunity to
spend a day with the original trophy through the course of the
summer until it is returned to the Hall of Fame in Toronto.
It is unusual among trophies in that it has the names
of all of the winning players, coaches, management, and club staff
engraved on its chalice. Originally inscribed the Dominion Hockey
Challenge Cup, the trophy was donated in 1892 by then-Governor
General of Canada the Lord Stanley of Preston. After a series of
league mergers and folds, the Cup became the de facto championship
trophy of the NHL after the 1925 season.
As a player Hrkac hoisted the Cup in 1999 after his
Dallas Stars team won the NHL crown, and now area hockey fans will
have an up close viewing opportunity.
