Men’s Hockey suffers defeat to Northland

Box Score: CUW 2, NC 6

ASHLAND, Wis. - Down by only one goal early in the third period, the Concordia University Wisconsin men's hockey team came up short against Northland College on Friday night, losing 6-2 after the Lumberjacks ran away with the victory inside the Bay Area Civic Center.

CUW (2-12-2, 2-8-1 MCHA) was only outshot by a 42-40 margin and got 36 saves from freshman goalie Josh Lehr (Appleton, Wis.), but Northland's potent offense was too much to overcome.

The Falcons were within striking distance after sophomore Russell Johnson (Monticello, Minn.) scored to make it 3-2 less than a minute into the third period, but the Lumberjacks (6-8-2, 5-5-1 MCHA) blew the game open with a three goals of their own in the final frame to put the game beyond doubt.

The hosts had an early 2-0 lead in the first period through a pair of goals from Mike Lennon; but sophomore Dan Shilts (New Richmond, Wis.) put the Falcons on the board later in the opening frame, with the help of assists from junior siblings Greg Douglas and Graylyn Douglas (Plano, Texas).

After Northland's Chad Liley scored the only goal of the second period to make the score 3-1, Johnson used a pass from sophomore Shay Klitzke (Annandale, Minn.) to cut into the lead once more.

But less than a minute later, the Lumberjacks scored the first of three third period goals to kill the game off.

The two teams will meet once more tomorrow, with the action scheduled to start at 3:05 p.m.
