UW-Stout men's hockey skates past Falcons 6-1

Box Score: UWS 6, CUW 1

MENOMONIE, Wis. -- Concordia University Wisconsin grabbed an early 1-0 lead on a goal by sophomore Russell Johnson (Monticello, Minn.) from Michael Zirk (

/>North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada/>) but it was all UW-Stout after that as the powerful hosts defeated head coach Tony Hrkac's Falcons 6-1 on Friday evening in the season opener for both teams at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

Waking from their momentary slumber, the Blue Devils stormed the CUW (0-1) goal and took a 2-1 lead before the first period ended. UW-Stout added three second period tallies before finishing CUW off with a final score in the third.

UW-Stout (1-0) outshot CUW 44-16, as the frustrated Falcons were unable to take advantage of five separate power play opportunities.

Freshman Josh Lehr (Appleton, Wis.) was strong in goal for Hrkac's club with 38 saves.
