Men’s Hockey can’t hang on against Finlandia

CEDARBURG, Wis. - After coming out on the winning end
of a 13-goal outburst on Friday night, the Concordia University
Wisconsin men's hockey team fell short in what was another
high-scoring affair on Saturday afternoon, losing to Finlandia
University 5-4 at the Ozaukee Ice Center.
The Falcons (2-11-2, 2-7-1 MCHA) were hanging on to a late lead after two second period goals from freshman Tanner Tryggestad (Amery, Wis.) had put CUW on top 4-3, but the Lions scored twice in the final five minutes of regulation to steal the victory.
Junior Andrew Parrott (Green Bay, Wis.) and freshman Dustin Jonasson (West Fargo, N.D.) also scored for the Falcons, but CUW couldn't land the knockout punch in the final period, and Finlandia took advantage.
The Lions (2-12-0, 2-8-0 MCHA) grabbed a quick 2-0 lead after only seven minutes, when Collin Saint-Onge scored off a faceoff in the Falcons' zone, before Alex Heinonen lit the lamp just two minutes later.
Parrott got the Falcons on the board later in the first period, scoring his first career goal after redirecting a point shot off the stick of sophomore Michael Lezotte (Oxford, Mich.).
After Heinonen scored his second goal of the afternoon to put the Lions up 3-1, Jonasson poked the puck home from inside the crease after sophomore Ryan Richmond (Portage, Ind.) had gotten a shot through the legs of Finlandia goaltender Michael Wuthrich.
Tryggestad then provided the game-tying and go-ahead goals for CUW in the second period.
First, he snapped a wrist shot from the slot past Wuthrich to tie the game at 3-3, before giving the Falcons a 4-3 lead late in the middle frame by grabbing a loose puck and scoring from in close.
But with CUW clinging on to its one-goal advantage late in the third period, Griffen Hodges put Finlandia back on level terms with under five minutes to go.
Heinonen then completed his hat trick with less than three minutes remaining, scoring the game-winning goal and sealing the win.
The Falcons will have a week of practice before traveling to Ashland, Wis. next weekend to take on Northland College.
