Douglas’ two goals lead Men’s Hockey in offensive outburst

Box Score: CUW 7, FU 6

CEDARBURG, Wis. - Greg Douglas scored a pair of goals in the opening period and the Concordia University Wisconsin men's hockey team tallied four goals in the first 20 minutes en route to a 7-6 victory over Finlandia University in MCHA play at the Ozaukee Ice Center.

After both teams traded a pair of goals during the first 12:53 of the game on Friday evening, CUW then scored four-consecutive goals on their way to the highest offensive output this season. The Falcons seven goals were the most tallied since an 8-7 win over the University of Minnesota-Crookston on Dec. 13, 2008.

In all, six different CUW skaters found the back of the net. Despite being outshot 37-26 in the contest the Falcons scored five of their seven goals at full strength.

After building a 6-3 lead after sophomore Dan Shilts (New Richmond, Wis.) scored his first tally of the season to begin the third period, the Lions responded with three-straight goals to make things interesting with one minute remaining in the game. CUW was able to clear the puck and run the clock out to win the game.

Freshman goaltender Josh Lehr (Appleton, Wis.) recorded 31 saves to earn the victory. Sophomore Russell Johnson (Monticello, Minn.) led all players with three points - one goal and two assists.

Douglas (assisted by freshman Cole Weiser (Beloit, Wis.)) put the Falcons on the board less than four minutes into the game when he gained the puck in the zone and fired from the slot to beat FU goalie Dainis Vasiljevs glove side.

The Lions evened the scoreboard for the first time just over a minute later when Alex Heinonen scored his second goal of the season.

Junior Jake Furey (Cedarburg, Wis.) scored his first goal of the season on a tip-in shot from Johnson to give CUW a 2-1 lead. Again, FU had an answer with a Sean Burke goal to tie the game in the opening period under 13 minutes in.

The CUW scoring run began with Douglas' second tally in the opening period before Johnson also scored to give the Falcons a 4-2 advantage after 20 minutes of play.

Weiser and freshman Dustin Jonasson (West Fargo, N.D.) scored back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart in the second period to push CUW's lead to 6-2.

Lions' Kevin Smith scored at the 15:08 mark in the second period to cut their deficit to 6-3. Following FU's goal the intensity on the ice increased and two five-minute facemask penalties, along with three 10-minute game misconduct, whistles were blown.

In the end, Shilts scored the game-winning tally on a breakaway before FU made things interesting with three goals.

CUW concludes the two-game set with FU on Saturday at 2 p.m. In addition, the Stanley Cup will be on hand for public viewing.
