Women's Basketball goes cold, upset by Alverno

MILWAUKEE – Concordia University Wisconsin missed a 10-foot runner as time expired and shot poorly, as Alverno College earned a 47-45 victory during Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play on Saturday inside Reiman Gymnasium.

The Falcons missed four field goal attempts, including a pair of 3-pointers, in the final minute and ended the game shooting a season-worst 26.7 percent. CUW was also 3-of-22 from downtown.

Despite poor shooting, they trailed by a point with one minute and seven seconds remaining in the game. After a miss from long range and a missed layup, the Falcons were forced to foul. AC made the first of two free throws, which opened the door for CUW.

The Falcons again missed a triple and was forced to foul, which resulted in the Inferno missing both free throw attempts. CUW had a chance after dribbling the length of the floor and getting an open 10-footer, but it caromed off the back iron.

CUW forced 24 turnovers and converted those AC errors into 14 points. However, the Falcons were outscored 28-14 in the paint and outrebounded 54-29.

Senior Katie Luethe (Oshkosh, Wis.) had a team-high 12 points, but shot 6-of-18 from the floor. She also pulled down five rebounds, assisted on two field goals and blocked a career-high-tying three shots. Sophomore Madelyn Landgraf (Elkhart Lake, Wis.) added 11 points and five rebounds.

Senior Camille Parsons (Urbana, Ill.) netted nine points for the Falcons, while sophomore Megan Coenen (Green Bay, Wis.) had five points and a team-best nine rebounds.

Devon Gorman led all players with 13 points and six assists, to go along with 10 rebounds. Mollie Mikyska also had a double-double, 10 points and 14 rebounds.

The Falcons made just six field goals in the opening half and trailed 26-17 at the break. It was their lowest scoring output in a half this season.

During the second half CUW held AC (16-8, 13-6 NACC) to six field goal makes, but couldn't find its offensive touch to pull out a road win.

CUW (20-4, 16-3 NACC) clinched the second seed in the NACC Tournament and will host an undetermined opponent on Saturday, Feb. 22 inside the R. John Buuck Field House. The opponent and game time will be announced on CUWFalcons.com when the information becomes available.
