Women's Basketball edges Concordia Chicago in CIT matchup

MEQUON, Wis. – It was tight from start to finish on Saturday during the Concordia Invitational Tournament consolation game between Concordia University Chicago and Concordia University Wisconsin. Madelyn Landgraf scored 13 points off the bench to help the Falcons prevail with a 64-59 victory inside the R. John Buuck Field House.

There were seven scoring ties and six lead changes, but the storyline was the Cougars tenacity to keep the game within single digits. Earlier this season on Jan. 8, CUW trounced CUC by 35 points, 71-36, in Mequon during a lopsided showdown.

After leading by just a field goal at halftime, 30-28, the Falcons pushed their advantage to a game-best 11 points, 43-32, with 13:32 to play in the game. CUC slowly chipped away at its deficit and tied the game, 44-44, over five minutes later to elevate the intensity on the court.

Down the stretch Landgraf (sophomore, Elkhart Lake, Wis.) made all four of her free throw attempts and senior Anna Butler (Kewaskum, Wis.) made 3-of-4 free throws to stave off any chance of a Cougar (0-18) upset.

Butler was named to the All-CIT Tournament team for her efforts in the two games.

Senior Camille Parsons (Urbana, Ill.) led CUW with 16 points, including three 3-pointers, while Landgraf and Butler each had 13 points. Senior Katie Luethe (Oshkosh, Wis.) ended with seven points, nine rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Megan Coenen (Green Bay, Wis.) recorded eight points, seven rebounds and a career-high three steals. Freshman Tori Riechers (Cedarburg, Wis.) chipped in six points and grabbed seven rebounds.

April Broska led all scorers with 19 points, including 9-of-11 at the free throw line, to go along with four rebounds. Angelik Young hauled in a game-best 12 rebounds and scored five points off the bench. Hannah Rummel added 13 points.

CUW (16-2) held a 48-36 rebounding advantage over CUC, but was outscored in the paint 30-16.

Neither team wanted to take control of the game in the opening 20 minutes of play, as there were six scoring ties and four lead changes. The Cougars tallied 12 points in the paint and the Falcons had a 9-0 lead in second chance scoring.

CUW returns to action on Wednesday for an extremely important Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup with Wisconsin Lutheran College at 7 p.m. inside the R. John Buuck Field House.
