No. 18 Softball Mops up MSOE

MEQUON, Wis. – It was a battle of the two undefeated teams in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference on Saturday afternoon at Catalyst Park. The Raiders rumbled north with a 4-0 record in the NACC and the Falcons were 3-0 heading into the day. The Falcons picked up a pair of 2-1 and 6-0 victories to remain unbeaten in the NACC at 5-0 and improve to 16-3 on the year.

The Raiders took advantage of an error in the fourth inning and scored their lone run of the day on a bases-loaded walk.

The Falcons took the lead in the sixth inning when senior Claudia Utz (Lockport, Ill.) took advantage of a 3-0 count and hammered the ball into the gap in left-center field to score senior Gabbi Gaziano (Beloit, Wis.) and senior Sydney Erdmann (Geneva, Ill.).

In a battle of two top-10 pitchers in NCAA Division III statistics, senior Gina Followell (Romeoville, Ill.) shined bright on Saturday with a game-high 10 strikeouts and only two hits against and no earned runs.

Sydney Erdmann secured a game-high two hits.

The Falcons drew first blood in game two.

Sophomore Jasmine Freeze (Bolingbrook, Ill.) sent the ball flying over the fence in right field in the second inning.

The Falcons earned some separation in the fifth inning when sophomore Adrianna Martinez (Chicago, Ill.) singled to right field to plate Gabbi Gaziano after she had a triple to right field. A double from sophomore Jess Pozezinski (Lake Villa, Ill.) to center field then scored junior Madi Wheat (Coweta, Okla.) from first base.

In the sixth inning, senior Ashley Zappa (Zion, Ill.) lobbed a double to center field to score junior Emily Walters (Waupun, Wis.) and senior Abby Kerrins (Cullom, Ill.). Zappa advanced to third base on an error and then scored on an infield play off the bat from Gabbi Gaziano where she shielded Zappa.

The Raiders left nine runners on the base path in game two, including a pair in scoring position in the second and fourth innings and the bases loaded in the sixth inning.

Senior Nicki Becker (Brodhead, Wis.) kept the Raiders quiet with five strikeouts, no runs and only one walk in her sixth victory of the season.

Gina Followell earned her first save of the season with two strikeouts.

Sydney Erdmann, Jess Pozezinski and Jasmine Freeze all had two hits in the victory.

The Falcons return to action on Monday at Rockford.
