No. 16 Softball Splits with No. 23 Central

TUCSON, Ariz. – The 16th-ranked Falcons wrapped up spring break play on Friday against the 23rd-ranked Dutch of Central of Iowa. The teams played two games with the Falcons taking game one, 5-4 in 10 innings and fell 3-4 in game two to move to 9-3 on the year.

The Dutch struck first in game one with a run on a bunt. 

The Falcons tied the game in the second inning when senior Ashley Zappa (Zion, Ill.) sent the ball over the left-field fence.

The Dutch responded with a run in the fourth inning. 

The birds tied the game in the sixth inning when junior Madi Wheat (Coweta, Okla.) whacked a single to center field that scored freshman Julia Moker (Hubertus, Wis.) from second base.

Senior Claudia Utz (Lockport, Ill.) ended the threat in the seventh inning when she gunned down the runner trying to steal second.

The Dutch tried to take the lead in the eighth inning but senior Sydney Erdmann (Geneva, Ill.) threw out a runner at the plate from right field.

The Red and White took the lead again in the top half of the ninth inning. 

A sacrifice bunt from sophomore Adrianna Martinez (Chicago, Ill.) was able to get Ashley Zappa across home plate. 

The Dutch then struck again with a double in the 10th inning. 

Ashley Zappa became the game-one hero with a double into the gap in left-center field that plated sophomore Jess Pozezinski (Lake Villa, Ill.) and Madi Wheat to win the game. 

Sydney Erdmann finished with a game-high three hits. 

Senior Gina Followell (Romeoville, Ill.) remained unbeaten on the year with four strikeouts. 

The birds were first on the scoreboard again in game two.

Jess Pozezinski sent a bullet down the left-field line that scored Madi Wheat from second base.

In the second inning, Sydney Erdmann singled to left field and that was able to score senior Gabbi Gaziano (Beloit, Wis.) from second base.

Ashley Zappa singled up the middle of the infield in the third inning to get Claudia Utz across home plate from second base. 

The Dutch finished the game with a run in the third, two in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Senior Nicki Becker (Brodhead, Wis.) posted four strikeouts against Central. 

Erdmann led the attack in game two with two hits.

The Falcons will fly back to Wisconsin and take on Ripon next week.
