No. 20 Softball Sweeps WLC on Sunday

MEQUON, Wis. – The 20th-ranked Concordia Wisconsin softball team opened Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play on Sunday afternoon. The Falcons picked up a pair of victories at 6-1 and 9-1 to improve to 13-3 on the year and to 2-0 in the NACC.

The scoring started on Sunday with a home run crushed over the fence in center field by sophomore Jess Pozezinski (Lake Villa, Ill.), scoring junior Madi Wheat (Coweta, Okla.) in the first inning.

The Warriors scored their lone run in the fourth inning on a home run.

The Falcons responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

Senior Claudia Utz (Lockport, Ill.) scurried home on a wild pitch after she smacked a triple.

Freshman Julia Moker (Hubertus, Wis.) rounded the bases when a throwing error sent the ball into the outfield when she tried to steal second base.

Senior Sydney Erdmann (Geneva, Ill.) popped up to second base and senior Ashley Zappa (Zion, Ill.) saw her opportunity and raced home to score.

The game-one scoring ended in the fifth inning when Claudia Utz crushed the ball over the fence in center field.

Senior Gina Followell (Romeoville, Ill.) ruined the day for the Warrior batters with a season-high 16 strikeouts.

Claudia Utz finished with a game-high two hits.

Junior Emily Walters (Waupun, Wis.) stole two bases in game one.

The Falcons only needed five innings in game two.

The birds threw the first punch in the first inning when Jess Pozezinski blasted a laser to shortstop on a single that scored Sydney Erdmann.

In the second inning, freshman Rylie DuVal (Elgin, Ill.) dropped the ball into right field on a single that allowed Ashley Zappa and Emily Walters to safely cross home plate.

Jess Pozezinski then singled to left field to score DuVal.

Claudia Utz cleared the bases with a grand slam over the center field fence that also plated Jess Pozezinski, Madi Wheat and Sydney Erdmann.

The Green and White scored the only run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly.

The game ended in the fifth inning with a single down the left-field line from Sydney Erdmann to land senior Abby Kerrins (Cullom, Ill.) on home plate.

Senior Nicki Becker (Brodhead, Wis.) wrapped up the Warriors with six strikeouts and only two hits in her second-straight victory.

Sydney Erdmann whacked the Warriors with three hits and two runs in game two.

The birds were running in game two with Sydney Erdmann, Julia Moker, Ashley Zappa and senior Gabbi Gaziano (Beloit, Wis.) all stealing a base.

The Falcons return to action on Monday against Edgewood.
