No. 16 Softball Sweeps Opening Day

RHINELANDER, Wis. – The 16th-ranked Falcons of Concordia Wisconsin opened the 2023 season with a 5-4 victory over Wisconsin-Stevens Point and a 7-1 victory over Wisconsin-Stout.

Junior Madison Wheat started the scoring in the fifth inning against UWSP with a double to right field that scored sophomore Adrianna Martinez. Senior Claudia Utz then homered to left field to score Wheat.

The Pointers tied the game with three runs in the sixth inning.

Senior Ashley Zappa scored on an error in the ninth inning and a single from Maddie Wheat scored freshman Julia Moker.

Senior Gina Followell had 12 strikeouts and no earned runs.

Madison Wheat had three hits in the first game.

Strout struck first with a run in the fourth inning in game two.

The Falcons broke the game open in the fifth inning.

Sophomore Amber Behr scored on an error.

Senior Sydney Erdmann scored on a bases-loaded walk, and sophomore Megan Bloyer singled to score Madison Wheat.

Sophomore Jess Pozezinski scored on another bases-loaded walk and Claudia Utz scored on a wild pitch.

Junior Emily Walters scored in the sixth inning on a double steal.

Senior Nicki Becker had eight strikeouts in the win.

CUW resumes play on Sunday against Wisconsin-Stout and St. Scholastica.
