Women’s Soccer silences the Sabres

MEQUON, Wis. – The Falcons' offense and defense both shined on Wednesday against the Sabres of Marian in a 6-0 shutout victory. The rain could not slow down the CUW women's soccer team as they improved to 8-1 and to 4-0 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.

"Today we had a great collective effort from the very beginning of the match," said head coach Ryan Middendorf. "Our back line was particularly tremendous today. I love how our team responded from a tough loss over the weekend."

Junior Allison McElwee (Laramie, Wyo.) snuck past two defenders off a pass from junior Abby Blok (Oostburg, Wis.) to start the scoring.

After a shot from freshman Karoline Haugland (Bergen, Norway) rang off the cross bar, junior Alexandra Tomich (Mission Viejo, Calif.) headed the rebound towards the net and sophomore Isabel Downs (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) tapped the ball in the net.

Alexandra Tomich rang a shot into the extreme lower left corner to put the Falcons up 3-0 off a pass from Karoline Haugland.

The Blue and White took a 3-0 lead into halftime.

In the 49th minute, Karoline Haugland put away a cross from Isabel Downs.

Downs was able to steal the ball from the Sabres' defense in the 77th minute and found freshman Selena Esten (Cedarburg, Wis.), who threw the ball in the upper corner.

Isabel Downs closed the scoring in the 87th minute off a steal in front of the net.

The Concordia defense posted its third shutout of the season on Wednesday.

Junior Kaeley Sterkel (Dana Point Calif.) secured six saves in the victory.

The Blue and White held a 30-12 shots advantage against Marian.

The Falcons have scored five or more goals in five of their nine matches.

CUW will travel to Rockford on Saturday, before hosting Benedictine on Sunday.
