Falcons Sweep Sabres

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The CUW softball team traveled to Marian for what should have been a game at Catalyst Park on Thursday. The Falcons were slated to play a doubleheader with the Sabres of Marian on the shores of Lake Michigan, but the weather had different plans. With the rain, the game was moved to Marian's home field, but the Falcons remained the designated home team.

It was all Falcons all day in game one with a 5-0 final score.

Freshman Jess Pozezinski (Lake Villa, Ill.) got things off the ground with a bang and a deep drive down the left-field line for a home run. In the fourth inning, the Falcons notched three more runs with junior Ashley Zappa (Zion, Ill.) scoring senior Claudia Utz (Lockport, Ill.) off of a single up the middle. Freshman Megan Bloyer (Oregon, Wis.) crossed the plate after a single to left field off the bat of senior Taylor Kuske (Kaukauna, Wis.). Zappa crossed the plate off of a sacrifice fly from senior Krystal Cortes (Aurora, Ill.).

The Falcons snagged another run in the bottom of the fifth inning with Zappa batting in sophomore Emily Walters (Waupun, Wis.).

Senior Gina Followell (Romeoville, Ill.) mowed down the Marian batters with 10 strikeouts in her seven innings on the mound.

Game two saw another Falcon victory with a final score of 8-4.

The Sabres scored the first run in the top of the second inning.

The Falcons responded with a run off the bat of junior Gabbi Gaziano (Beloit, Wis.) which crossed Kuske.

Utz crossed the plate in the bottom of the fourth off the bat of Kuske and Kuske crossed with a double from sophomore Maddison Wheat (Coweta, Okla.) to take the 3-1 lead.

Wheat came across the plate later in the inning off of a throwing error.

Marian scored one run in the top of the fifth and two in the top of the sixth to tie up the game at four runs each.

Zappa scored after a throwing error in the bottom of the sixth with Gaziano scoring later off a double from Pozezinski to take the lead back at 6-4.

Pozezinski came home with an RBI from junior Sydney Erdmann (Geneva, Ill.) with senior Kelsey Bollon (Orangeville, Ill.) coming across not far behind for the 8-4 lead.

The Falcons finished the matchup with 12 hits.

Senior Nicki Becker (Brodhead, Wis.) recorded seven strikeouts in her six innings on the mound.

Followell came in to close the matchup out and came away with three strikeouts in her one-inning appearance in game two.

The Falcons look to stay on the win train in a matchup with Concordia Chicago on Saturday.
