Softball Duels Dominican

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The CUW softball team closed a very busy week at Alverno on Saturday against the Stars of Dominican. The Falcons won round one with an 8-0 victory in five innings. The Stars struck back with a 7-4 victory in game two. The Falcons are now 20-3 on the year and move to 8-2 in the NACC. CUW has now reached the 20-win plateau for the 15th time in program history and for the 13th-straight time that it was possible.

Junior Claudia Utz (Lockport, Ill.) got the ball rolling in the first inning of game one when she blasted a shot down the left-field line to score junior Sydney Erdmann (Geneva, Ill.).

Freshman Jess Pozezinski (Lake Villa, Ill.) then pushed the ball down the left-field line to score senior Kelsey Bollon (Orangeville, Ill.).

Junior Ashley Zappa (Zion, Ill.) had a spicy shot up the middle of the infield in the third inning that scored Jess Pozezinski and Claudia Utz.

A sacrifice fly from senior Kristen Fontana (Hickory Hills, Ill.) allowed freshman Megan Bloyer (Oregon, Wis.) to cross home plate in the third inning.

Jess Pozezinski closed the scoring in the fourth inning when she sent the ball over the fence in centerfield and added Kelsey Bollon to the scoreboard.

Senior Gina Followell (Romeoville, Ill.) took a perfect game into the fifth inning and finished with seven strikeouts on only one hit against.

Jess Pozezinski had three of the nine hits for the Falcons in game one.

Game two was the first time this season that the Falcons lost when they scored a run.

The Stars struck first with a run in the first and second innings.

Megan Bloyer scored Jess Pozezinski in the second inning on a shot down the right-field line.

Junior Gabbi Gaziano (Beloit, Wis.) then tied the game on a shot into the gap in right-center field when sophomore Emily Walters (Waupun, Wis.).

The Stars scored five runs in the third inning.

Freshman Adrianna Martinez (Chicago, Ill.) came into pitch and held the Stars to three hits and one strikeout.

Claudia Utz put a dent into the Dominican lead in the sixth inning with a two-run home run to left field that scored Kelsey Bollon.

The Falcons look to bounce back on Monday against Marian.
