Men’s Hockey Clinches Final Playoff Spot at Finlandia

HANCOCK, Mich. – The CUW men's hockey team clinched the eighth seed in the conference tournament with a shootout win against Finlandia.

The Falcons struck first in the fifth minute off the stick of sophomore Nick Wieben (Mankato, Minn.).

He was assisted by freshmen Grant Newcomer (McFarland, Wis.) and Noah Roitman (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.).

Finlandia tied it up at one in the 15th minute.

12 seconds after Finlandia scored, the Falcons went back up one goal with a goal from Roitman. He was assisted by junior Joey Petronack (White Bear Lake, Minn.).

Finlandia tied the matchup at two on a powerplay opportunity heading into the first break.

The Blue and White opened the second period with a shorthanded goal from Newcomer who was assisted by freshman Derek Humphreys (Spokane, Wash.).

The Lions netted an unassisted goal to tie things at three.

Roitman and freshman Dain Sardelli (Hebron, N.D.) found Petronack for the fourth Falcon goal of the game.

Finlandia scored the lone goal in the third period to head into overtime.

In overtime, neither team found the back of the net so the Falcons and the Lions went into shootouts.

Roitman was the lone goal scorer in the shootout to claim the 1-0 shootout victory.

The Falcons claimed the final spot in the NCHA playoffs with the victory.
