Men's Hockey scores two power-play goals to defeat Lake Forest

MEQUON, Wis. – The play on the ice was even throughout until Concordia University Wisconsin scored a pair of power-play goals in the final period to defeat Lake Forest College, 2-0, on Friday night during Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association play at the Ozaukee Ice Center.

LFC committed a hitting the goalie penalty at 5:33 in the third period, which allowed CUW's Devin Stuermer (freshman, Milwaukee, Wis.) to fire a shot which rebounded back to him. He then carried the puck for a wrap-around goal to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The score gives Stuermer four straight games with a goal.

Freshman Dan Szerlip scored an empty-net, power-play goal nearly four minutes later to extend CUW's advantage to 2-0. The marker was assisted by freshman Eli Riddle (Blissfield, Mich.). The victory was the third straight for the Falcons, a program record.

Freshman goalkeeper Jake Hebda (Firestone, Colo.) earned his first career shutout victory after stopping 28 shots. Many of the shots fired on Hebda were from close range and in the slot.

CUW was superb defensively in the third period after it committed back-to-back penalties less than a minute apart to put itself in a hole. The Falcons' freshman forward Lawrence Childs (Silver Springs, Md.) led the spirited 3-on-5 penalty kill to keep the game knotted at 0-0 for the time being.

LFC (1-3-0, 1-2-0 MCHA) finished 0-for-4 on power-play opportunities, which included two in the second and third periods.

CUW completes the MCHA home-and-home series on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Lake Forest College's Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse.
