Men's Hockey sweeps MCHA series over Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin scored three goals in the third period, including two power-play conversions, to earn a Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association sweep with a 3-2 victory over Lawrence University on Saturday night at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

Junior Dan Shilts (New Richmond, Wis.) scored the game-winning, power-play goal with less than four minutes to play in the contest, with freshmen Franco Loparco (Toronto, Ontario) and Trammell Lynes (Edmonton, Alberta) assisting on the score. The conference sweep was the second in program history and the first of the season.

It was a battle to see which team could find a rhythm because the skating on the ice was not clean, as there were a combined 25 penalties called for 58 minutes. Despite the amount of whistles blown, the Falcons found a way to convert two of their eight man-up advantages, while the Vikings were 1-of-6 on power-play opportunties.

Freshman Jake Hebda (Firestone, Colo.) picked up the win between the pipes after recording 29 saves.

The first 32:35 minutes of action was scoreless until LU's Brad Scurfield took advantage of a power play opportunity to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. Logan Lemirande assisted on the tally.

CUW (2-3-0, 2-2-0 MCHA) answered when Loparco scored an even-strength goal less than two minutes into the final period to tie the contest. Freshman Harrison Newlands (Toronto, Ontario) and Shilts assisted on the goal.

The Falcons took their first lead of the game after freshman Devin Stuermer (Milwaukee, Wis.) pounded home the team's first power-play success to move them in front, 2-1. Freshman Kevin Michelcavage (Sterling Heights, Mich.) and Newlands assisted on the goal. It was Newland's second assists of the contest.

LU's Phil Bushbacher scored with 6:10 to play in the contest to even the scoring at 2-2. Rudi Pino recorded an assist the Viking (0-2-0, 0-2-0 MCHA) goal.

CUW returns to action on Friday with a home-and-home series against Lake Forest College at 7 p.m. at the Ozaukee Ice Center.
