Baseball drops both in twinbill against University of Chicago

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Concordia University Wisconsin baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against the University of Chicago Tuesday afternoon. Chicago took the opener 7-3 before winning the second contest, 11-4.

The opening contest saw Maroons pitcher Kyle Nitiss baffle the Falcon bats as they were limited to three hits in the contest. Junior catcher Beau Burgert (Oshkosh, Wis.) had two of the three hits for CUW, while freshman Nick Yenter (Rosholt, Wis.) added a single of his own.

Junior pitcher Andrew Mueller (Horicon, Wis.) took the loss for CUW as he threw all six innings, allowing three earned and striking out two. Nittis struck out three in his complete game three-hit victory for Chicago.

The game turned in the bottom of the third as the Maroons plated four runs, turning a 1-0 lead into a 5-0 advantage. The Falcons would push two across in the fourth and one more in the top of the fifth but UC scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth, giving them the 7-3 win.

The second game of the doubleheader saw Chicago jump out to a 9-0 lead after two and a half innings of play as it would score four runs in the first and third, adding one in the top of the second. CUW had its best inning in the fifth, scoring three runs, but that would not be enough as UC swept the twinbill, winning game two 11-3.

Senior Daniel Mueller (West Bend, Wis.) went 2-for-3 in game two, driving in one run and scoring once while freshman Brock Bateman (Pewaukee, Wis.) added a 2-for-3 performance of his own. Sophomore Matthew Brueser (Oconomowoc, Wis.) took the loss for the Falcons.

Chicago (3-4) was paced by the middle of its order in game two as its three and four hitters, Jack Cinoman and Brett Huff, combined for five hits and drove in five runs.

CUW (0-8) will conclude its Florida trip tomorrow when they take on Western Connecticut State University. The first pitch of tomorrow's single game is set for 9:30 a.m. EDT.
