Sabres Sink Baseball

MEQUON, Wis. – The Falcons fell short in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon against Marian. The Sabres picked up 2-1 and 4-2 victories to send the Falcons to 13-16 on the year and 8-8 in the NACC.

The Falcons took advantage of a walk of senior Jack Owens (Chicago, Ill.) in the first inning when senior Cole Aguirre (Chino Hills, Calif.) enabled Owens to score from first place on a double down the left-field line. Senior Jimmy Juergensen (Cedarburg, Wis.) then sent the ball sailing down the right-field line to score Aguirre on a single.

The Sabres earned a run back in the second inning on a single to left field.

Junior Luke Bruckner (Fond du Lac, Wis.) had a quality start on the mound for the Falcons and only allowed one run and five hits in the first four innings.

The Sabres struck back with two runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead.

The Falcons threatened with runners on first and second but could not get the tying run across.

Senior Jack Hribernik (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) and junior Chris Rooney (Mundelein, Ill.) each had a strikeout from the bullpen.

Jimmy Juergensen had two of the five hits in game one.

Marian jumped on the Falcons early in game two with two runs in the first inning. The Birds filled the bases in the bottom half of the inning but could not capitalize.

Defense reigned supreme in the middle inning of game two.

The Falcons' comeback started in the seventh inning when Jack Owens struck a single into right-center to plate freshman Jordan Vasquez (Chicago, Ill.).

Sophomore JT Hockers (Middleton, Wis.) silenced the Sabres during his four-inning appearance on the mound with zero hits allowed and two strikeouts. Senior Tyler Drezek (West Allis, Wis.) also did not allow a hit for two innings.

The Birds leveled the game in the ninth inning when Jordan Vasquez once again started the inning with a walk. Freshman Connor Lasch (Chicago, Ill.) then advanced him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Freshman Luke Heinkel (Brookfield, Wis.) came in clutch with a single up the middle to score Vasquez from second base.

The Sabres struck back in the 10th inning with two runs to retake the lead.

Cole Aguirre started the bottom of the 10th with a single to left field. Jimmy Jerugensen helped apply more pressure with a walk. Sophomore Matt Miller (Fredonia, Wis.) advanced the runners with a shot to shortstop, but the Falcons did not capitalize.

The Falcons look to bounce back on Saturday at Illinois Tech.
