Baseball pushes winning streak to four with sweep of Crusaders

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team ran its Northern Athletics Conference winning streak to four games as it swept Maranatha Baptist Bible College in a doubleheader Saturday at Kapco Park. The Falcons won both games via the 10-run rule, winning game one 16-0 and game two 11-1.

In the opener sophomore Michael Winter (Cedarburg, Wis.) was sensational on the mound as he went all seven innings en route to his first career collegiate victory. Winter struck out seven, while scattering seven hits and did not walk a batter in the complete game victory.

The Falcons bats were also on display in the opener as they totaled 12 hits and pushed across 16 runs in just six innings at the plate. After plating one run each in the first and second innings, CUW broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the third. The Falcons would add three in the fourth and six in the fifth en route to the 16-0 win.

Three CUW players finished with multiple hits in game one including leadoff batter Daniel Mueller (senior, West Bend, Wis.) and number two hitter Brandon Seifert (sophomore, Germantown, Wis.). Freshman Luke Scheuerlein (Thiensville, Wis.) added a pair of hits and drove in four runs from the number six spot in the batting order. In the opener, CUW scored a run from every spot in the batting order. Also helping out at the plate was freshman Nick Yenter (Rosholt, Wis.) as he drove in three runs.

Game two saw the Falcons offense pick up right where it left off in the opener as CUW pushed across six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman Jimmy Doedens (Germantown, Wis.) had the big hit of the inning as he belted a triple down the rightfield line to score two runs.

CUW (7-12, 7-3 NAC) would add one run each in the third and fourth innings before plating two more in the bottom of the fifth in game two. The Falcons would then finish the game in the bottom of inning seven when junior Ty Wester (Germantown, Wis.) singled in Seifert to end the game virtue of the 10-run rule.

Sophomore Tyler Adams (Jackson, Wis.) picked up the win for the Falcons in the second contest as he went five innings and allowed one earned run. Adams struck out four and scattered four hits in his five innings of work. Freshman Eli Riddle (Blissfield, Mich.) pitched the sixth and Wester toed the mound in the seventh for the Falcons as the pitching staff did not allow a walk in 14 innings of work Saturday.

Mueller and Seifert each added two more hits in the second game and combined to score three runs and drive in three more from the top of the CUW batting order. Sophomore Kyle Hegeman (New Berlins, Wis.) added two hits, including a double, and drove in two from the third spot in the batting order. Doedens also had a solid second game as he went 2-for-3, scoring twice and recording two RBIs.

CUW will return to action tomorrow when they play Lakeland College in a NAC twinbill at Kapco Park. The game was originally scheduled to be played at the Muskies home field but due to unplayable conditions has been moved to Kapco Park. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
