Falcon weekend preview, six teams competing for conference championships

MEQUON, Wis. – Six Concordia University Wisconsin Teams are competing in their conference tournament or championship this weekend, highlighting eight total CUW teams in action.

Softball began their six-team Northern Athletics Conference Tournament Thursday by defeating Concordia University Chicago, 5-4. The Falcons were scheduled to play Friday morning but will have to wait until Saturday as they will face top-seeded Aurora University at 9 a.m. All games for the NAC Softball Tournament are played at Alverno Field and the tournament follows a double-elimination format.

Women's Lacrosse is makings its first ever appearance in the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference Tournament as they will battle No. 1 seed Augustana College tonight at 7 p.m. The Falcons went 5-3 during conference play this season, while the Vikings went through the MWLC regular season unscathed.

Both the Men's and Women's Track & Field teams will be competing at the NAC Championships Friday and Saturday at Raabe Stadium in Milwaukee. The CUW Men are aiming for a second straight outdoor championship as they were co-champions with Benedictine University last season. The Women placed fourth in last year's meet.

The Men's Tennis team will be competing for a third consecutive NAC Tournament title Saturday. No. 1 seed CUW will take on No. 5 Edgewood College in a semifinals match at noon. A semifinal win over EC would advance the Falcons to the championship match at 4:30 p.m. at the Kohler Sports Core against either No. 2 MSOE or No. 3 Aurora University.

Women's Tennis will also be at the Kohler Sports Core Saturday as the third-seeded Falcons will take on No. 2 Wisconsin Lutheran College in a semifinal match beginning at 10:30 a.m. The Falcons defeated No. 6 Aurora, 5-0 on Monday in a First Round dual. The winner of CUW-WLC will face either top-seeded Edgewood College or No. 4 Dominican University at 3 p.m. tomorrow.

NAC Champion Women's Golf is one of two other CUW teams competing this weekend as it is scheduled to take on Lakeland College in a dual match Friday afternoon. The Falcons are looking to continue to improve its game before the NCAA Division III Championships, scheduled for May 14-17 in Destin, Fla.

Baseball rounds out the weekend for CUW athletics with a doubleheader against Marian University. The Falcons and Sabres will be playing with NAC Tournament implications. A CUW sweep and they clinch the fifth seed, while a split would put CUW in a position to earn the No. 6 seed, based on tiebreaking scenarios. If CUW gets swept by MU they will most likely miss the 2013 tournament.
