Baseball edges Carthage for non-conference win

MEQUON, Wis. – Junior pitcher Ty Wester picked up a win out of the bullpen for the second time this week in leading the Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team to a 4-3 non-conference victory over Carthage College Wednesday at Kapco Park.

The Falcons and Red Men were scoreless until the sixth inning when each team plated two runs. CUW received an RBI double from sophomore Joel Sharon (Glendale, Wis.) in the sixth and sophomore Blake Barker (Sedona, Ariz.) singled in Sharon.

The 2-2 tie would be broken in the Falcons next at bat as junior Beau Burgert (Oshkosh, Wis.) singled in sophomore Brandon Seifert (Germantown, Wis.) and freshman Jimmy Doedens (Germantown, Wis.) would also score on the play as the Red Men centerfielder misplayed the ball, giving CUW a 4-2 advantage.

Carthage (16-19) would attempt a comeback against Wester (Germantown, Wis.) and the Falcons in the ninth as they put runners on first and second with nobody out. CC then got a bunt single and the Falcons threw the ball into right field allowing one run to cross home plate, but a second runner was thrown out trying to score, keeping the lead at 4-3. Wester would retire the final two batters to earn his second win of the season.

Wester pitched three innings and allowed three hits, while striking out two and surrendering no earned runs. Sam Burnett took the loss for Carthage, his first of the season and he pitched two innings, allowing two runs, one earned. Also pitching for the Falcons Wednesday were sophomores Tyler Adams (Jackson, Wis.) and Michael Klaver (Germantown, Wis.). Adams started the game and threw four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits.

The CUW (13-24) offense was paced by its two through four hitters in Seifert, Burgert and Sharon as each player tallied two hits. Drew Bailey and Stevo Kraynak each finished with a pair of hits to lead the Red Men offense.

CUW will return to the ballpark Saturday when they host Marian University in a crucial NAC doubleheader. MU and the Falcons currently sit in the final two spots for NAC Tournament berths and Saturday's doubleheader will determine if one or both teams advance to the six-team event scheduled for May 9-11 at Kapco Park. First pitch Saturday is set for 12 p.m.
