Scheuerlein's home run, strong pitching leads Baseball to sweep over MSOE

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team used timely hitting and quality pitching to sweep MSOE in a pair of Northern Athletic Conference games at Kapco Park Sunday afternoon. CUW won the opener, 5-4, before taking the second game by a 9-3 score.

In the first contest the Falcons faced a 3-2 deficit in the bottom of the eighth inning when freshman Luke Scheuerlein (Thiensville, Wis.) delivered the hit of the afternoon, belting a three-run home run over the right field wall to give CUW a 5-3 advantage.

The Raiders tried to comeback in the top of the ninth of the opener as they plated one run in the ninth, but junior Andrew Mueller (Horicon, Wis.) finished off MSOE, throwing a complete game for his second straight start. Mueller struck out six and allowed four runs, two earned as he gained his second victory of the season.

It was the Falcons who built the lead in the first game as they scored once each in the third and fifth innings, grabbing a 2-0 advantage. Sophomore Brandon Seifert (Germantown, Wis.) drove home both of the first two runs for CUW. MSOE would answer, however, plating three in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead, which would hold until the Scheuerlein round tripper in the eighth.

Scheuerlein finished the opener 2-for-4 at the dish, driving in three runs while Seifert added a pair of hits and two RBIs for CUW. Senior Daniel Mueller (West Bend, Wis.) recorded a triple for the Falcons in the win.

In the second contest CUW jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings of play with two of those being scored in the third inning. Sophomore Joel Sharon (Glendale, Wis.) had an RBI and scored a run to help the Falcons secure the 3-0 lead.

MSOE (5-9, 1-7 NAC) would hang around and trailed 5-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth but CUW would put the game away with a four spot in the sixth inning. Sharon had the big hit of the inning, recording an RBI double to help the Falcons take a six-run advantage.

Junior Austin Baglow (Walled Lake, Mich.) picked up the win for CUW (5-12, 5-3 NAC), throwing seven quality innings. Baglow struck out seven and allowed just five hits. Sharon pitched the eighth and freshman Eli Riddle (Blissfield, Mich.) pitched the ninth to help close out the sweep for the Falcons.

Sharon finished the second game with three hits to pace the Falcons offense as every starter in the top four spots of the batting order recorded at least two hits. Joining Sharon with multiple hits were Mueller, Seifert, and sophomore Kyle Hegeman (New Berlin, Wis.).

The Falcons will return to the diamond Tuesday when they host Carthage College in a single game at Kapco Park. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
