Mueller, Burgert lead Baseball to key NAC sweep over Dominican

MEQUON, Wis. – Junior Beau Burgert hit a walk-off single in the second game, which followed a complete game by junior Andrew Mueller in the opener as the Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team swept Dominican by scores of 4-2 and 5-4 Saturday at Kapco Park.

In the second game CUW rallied from 4-1 deficit, which was capped off by the Burgert (Oshkosh, Wis.) single, scoring freshman Jacob Boudreaux (Wauwatosa, Wis.) and giving the Falcons a big sweep. No rally was needed in the opener as Mueller (Horicon, Wis.) was solid from the start as he struck out seven, while allowing seven hits and two runs over nine innings.

In game one the Falcons got on the board in the bottom of the first when freshman Nick Yenter (Rosholt, Wis.) hit a two-RBI single, scoring Burger and sophomore Brandon Seifert (Germantown, Wis.). The Falcons would push the lead to 3-0 in the fourth as sophomore Kyle Hegeman (New Berlins, Wis.) crossed the plate.

DU (12-25, 7-13 NAC) would not go away, however, as they scored once each in the fifth and sixth innings, making the score 3-2. The Falcons would add a little insurance in the bottom of the seventh as senior Daniel Mueller (West Bend, Wis.) scored junior Jay Kuczynski (Cedarburg, Wis.) on a sacrifice fly.

The Stars attempted a ninth-inning rally as they loaded the bases with two outs, but Mueller got a pinch hitter to ground out as the Falcons came away with the 4-2 victory.

It was Dominican who got on the board first in game two, as CUW picked up its first win of the season when its opponent scored first. DU scored in the top of the first when Lucas McKinney scored Adam Quinn. The Stars would add one more in the third, building a 2-0 lead.

CUW (12-21, 10-8 NAC) got its first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning as D. Mueller drove in Kuczynski but the Stars would push its lead to three in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs, including an RBI single from Joe Krasny.

The Falcons would begin their comeback in the bottom of the fourth, scoring twice on RBI singles off the bat of freshman Taylor Devenport (Saukville, Wis.) and Kuczynski. CUW would tie the game in the seventh as D. Mueller led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly from Burgert.

Burget completed the comeback in the bottom of the ninth as he roped an 0-1 pitch past the third baseman and into left field, scoring Boudreaux and giving the Falcons the 5-4 win.

Junior Ty Wester (Germantown, Wis.) picked up the win as he threw six innings in relief. Wester was masterful out of the bullpen as he struck out six batters and allowed just five hits and two runs. Ryan Kukla took the loss despite throwing a complete game for the Stars, scattering 12 hits over 8.1 innings.

CUW will return to action tomorrow when they take on NAC-leading Concordia University Chicago in a doubleheader. The games will be just the third and fourth road games for the Falcons this season and are scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
