Baseball falls in non-conference action against Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. – Carthage College used three home runs and a strong pitching performance from Sam Wilhelms to defeat Concordia University Wisconsin, 7-1, in a non-conference game at Augie Schmidt Field.

Nick Schmidlkofer, Kyle Pusateri and Tanner Wensman all belted home runs for the Red Men and Wilhelms limited the CUW bats to two hits over seven innings in leading Carthage to victory.

Carthage (16-18) got on the board early as its second batter, Schmidlkofer, hit his home run in the bottom of the first inning, putting the Red Men up 1-0. Carthage would extend its lead to 4-0 in the second as Matt Cmiel recorded an RBI triple and Pusateri added a solo home run.

CUW (12-24) would plate its only run of the game in the top of the fourth when sophomore Joel Sharon (Glendale, Wis.) doubled in senior Daniel Mueller (West Bend, Wis.). CC would add one run in the fifth and two more in the sixth on a two-run blast from Wensman, giving it the 7-1 victory.

Freshman Tyler Gross (Wauwatosa, Wis.) took the loss for the Falcons as he went five innings, allowing five earned and striking out two. Sophomore Colin Bernreuter (Frakenmuth, Mich.) pitched the final three innings, surrendering two earned and striking out three. Mitch Lochen pitched two innings of relief for Carthage, allowing just one hit.

Mueller, Sharon and pinch-hitter Blake Barker (Sedona, Ariz.) all tallied hits for the Falcons in the loss. Carthage got two hits apiece from Schmidlkofer, Pusateri, Wensman and Cmiel as the Red Men totaled 11 hits in the game. Neither team committed an error defensively.
